NEET PG Examination When to being

Preparations? Part A

Being underprepared or being overprepared are both Anatomy, Physiology,

harmful. The amount of psychological stress, this and Biochemistry
would bring, could be overpowering and
demotivating. Therefore, finding a middle ground is Part B
very crucial. Having said that, NEET PG has a vast Pathology,
syllabus, if you start preparing bit by bit, you will have Pharmacology,
a good hold on your basics, and you will have an edge
Microbiology,
over others. It is also noticed that people who start
Forensic Medicine,
preparing early, score very well. Therefore, rather
and Social and
than pondering over past performance, you should
Preventive Medicine
practice and keep updating your knowledge.

2. NEET PG Study Plan: Preparation Strategies

Approaching each NEET PG subject

Before you start with your preparations, look at the syllabus and check the previous
trends. That would give you an idea of what to expect from the paper. Devote maximum
time to areas that you feel are your weak spots. Although at the same time don't stop
preparations of parts you are confident about. The medical field is dynamic and new
information can be added at any given time. Therefore, it is important to stay updated.
That said, NEET PG 2020 Topper Rank 8, Sana Mohsin and Rank 12, Dr. Vinamrita Patni
say that more than subject wise, it is advisable to attempt Mock tests and Grant Test as a

whole. As they give a better picture of how much time needs to be dedicated to a certain
section. This also helps increase answering speed.

Test Series, Grant Tests, and Mock Tests for NEET PG examination

Overall all NEET PG 2020 Toppers agree, that they owe 50 to 70 percent credit to these
tests that they take for their preparations. This shows that reviewing tests and improving
yourself is very important. Giving Grant Test and Mock Tests don't just improve your
speed but also make you aware of the plethora of questions that can be asked during the
examination.

Hours to dedicate towards NEET PG examination

Each medical student would have a different game plan on how much time they want to
dedicate to their preparation. As per NEET PG 2020 rank 1, Dr. Shiv Kumar Sharma, Rank
3, Dr. Kartik Aggarwal and many other NEET PG 2020 Toppers, they did not have dedicated
time, when they would study. This was because they were preparing for the exams and
doing their internship at the same time. It was a tedious task to set a fixed hour for
studies, in such a situation. What they did do was, set a daily target. Whatever time they
found during the day; they would try to cover a small portion of the syllabus. This shows
that continuity is the key to studying well, therefore, even if it is a minor portion or topic,
each day you should try studying a bit. Giving problem-solving and revising an equal
amount of time is crucial as well.

That said, there are students who are preparing for NEET PG but are not doing any
internship. In such a situation, time management becomes very important. Since, you
would have ample amount of hours to study, it would be easy to go into the attitude of “I
have time, I will start in a bit”. This leniency on your part can cost you your precious study
time. Therefore, try to focus on two factors, firstly , planning your study and then
executing it with success.

Own notes and class notes for NEET PG examination

Writing down your points and understanding them always help in preparing better.
According to NEET PG 2020 Topper Rank 1, Dr. Shiv Kumar Sharma, whenever he felt
stuck, he would google them on Wikipedia, Radiopedia, and Pathology websites. This
helped him refine his answers.

Dr. Shiv Kumar maintained a booklet that consisted of Series no., Test name, Test Series,
Test Dates and the number of questions in it. Along with this, he would also note down
the number of questions he attempted and the ones he did not. This gave him a clear
picture of his mistakes.

Just like him, all NEET PG aspirants can set their own criteria, ideal marks, and minimum-
maximum marks. This would help you trance your improvement over a span of time. As
in the end of the day, you are your own biggest competitor.

Balancing Internship and NEET PG Preparations

Internships are very important, especially this year, according to NEET PG 2020 topper,
Rank 5, Dr. Aman Agrawal. This NEET PG 2020 had more clinical based questions, students
who had practiced and where working felt more confident and boosted while giving the
examination.

Looking at the preparations and Internships clashing, if a medical student asks their
seniors or teachers, they would easily accommodate them. An internship is a good time
to learn, as you would have trained professionals around you and you can ask for their
help at any given time. Even when you would feel low, you would have your seniors
around to motivate you and empower you.

NEET- PG Preparation the Rigorous Practice

Even if you are not doing an internship or have dropped out to prepare for the NEET PG
Exam, your dedication towards your preparation will determine your result. NEET PG
exam is conducted for a duration of 3 hours. What is often seen is that to increase the

level of the examination the authority twists the questions or rather flip it. This creates a
confusion in the minds of the students and thus igniting the panic button during the exam.
Therefore, what can you do to avoid these situations, you might ask. It’s simple, practice
from different sources, test series, online apps like E-Gurukul, and your good old friend
handmade notes.

National Exit Test (NEXT)

NEXT stands for National Exit Test. It was proposed by the government for the final year
MBBS programme in India. According to official Government records, this will be a
licensing programme for all Medical graduates. Apart from this, it will also serve as a
screening test for Foreign Medical graduates.

This exam will test an MBBS candidate’s overall eligibility and efficiency to be able to
practice as a doctor. Earlier students went through their internships after completing
their 5 ½ years of MBBS and subsequently for their PG. Although now, once the
programme is introduced, they would add a mandatory screening test, without which
none of the candidates would be able to apply for an internship nor complete their PG.

Key Points:

• Would be conducted once in a year.

• It would be a 2 tiers exam, Next part 1 and Next part 2.
• The Next part 1: March 2022.
• The Next part 2: April 2022.
• Next Part 1: Objective Test.
• Next part 2: Practical Exam.
• MBBS students are required to pass Next part 1 to be eligible for Internship.

Exambazaar is the largest education discovery platform in India & provides comprehensive information about
entrance exams, coaching classes in India. Find us at http://www.exambazaar.com/
NEET PG Preparation Guide 16

• Next Part 2 would make the students eligible to practice as a doctor.

• Students are required to pass the Next part 1 and part 2 in order to grab a PG seat
and licence.
• The Next part 1 will be conducted by a National Conducting Body while Next 2 will
be taken up by the University/College.

Exam Pattern of Next Part 1

Paper Subjects Question Duration

Paper 1 Medical 120 3 hours
Paper 2 Paediatrics 60 1.5 hours
Paper 3 Surgery 120 3 hours
Paper 4 ENT 60 1.5 hours
Paper 5 Obstetrics 120 3 hours
Gynaecology
Paper 5 Ophthalmology 60 1.5 hours
Total 540

Out of the total, 60% of the questions would be problem solving, 30% comprehension
and 10% recall.

Advantages of NEXT:
1. Since the exam will judge the students of their clinical skills, this will compel
them to prepare themselves better and increase their overall knowledge.
2. This will allow fair distribution of seats for PG and based on performance,
candidates would be allowed to move forward.
3. The students will be released from the burden of giving different exams for PG.
As only the pass certification of this exam will make them eligible for a seat.
4. This will merge all the different entrance exams for PG into one, thus, saving
the student’s time, energy and money.

Exambazaar: Congratulations on your outstanding result. How did you feel after the
results were out and what were your family’s reactions like?

Shiv Kumar Sharma, NEET PG 2020 Rank 1: It was a feeling I cannot define; I was very
elated and happy. Although, I did not get the time to celebrate. I was on a trip with my
friends when the results were out. Once we found out about it, we switched off our
phones as we did not want to spoil our moods. In the evening when we were having
dinner, my friend switched on his phone and found out, my father had called him. I spoke
to him, that is when I found out about my rank. After that, I was flooded with lots of calls
and messages.

Exambazaar: Why did you choose Medical as your career? Any reasons behind it?

Shiv Kumar Sharma: When I was very young, my parents and relatives would call me Dr.
Shiv. I liked it a lot. Later it became a driving force for me, and it motivated me to reach
here. I owe it all to them and my teachers.

Exambazaar: Have you taken the AIIMS PG or PGIMER?

Shiv Kumar Sharma: No, I need to complete my internship before I can sit for the AIIMS
PG exam. I am planning to give it soon now.

Exambazaar: Was this your first attempt or have you given the exam before?

Shiv Kumar Sharma: This was my very first attempt and I gave it my best shot.

Exambazaar: What was your rank during your NEET-UG? And which college had you
joined?

Shiv Kumar Sharma: I had secured an All India Rank 115 in NEET-UG, and All India Rank 1
in Rajasthan PMT. After which I joined SMS Medical College, Jaipur.

Exambazaar: Could you tell us how important are internships for medical students?

Shiv Kumar Sharma: An internship is very crucial and important for a medical student.
Especially now, because this year we had more clinical approach questions during our
exam. Therefore, since I was doing my internship, I felt very comfortable and confident
when attempting the questions that were provided to me. Also, when you are doing an
internship you get to work in 19 different fields, this is an experience of a lifetime as once
you pick your fields of work, there is no going back.

during the internship, and your learnings. When did you start preparing?

Shiv Kumar Sharma: I am pursuing my internship in SMS Jaipur currently. My Internship

is not very hectic, and my teachers were very helpful and accommodating during the
preparation phase. They would help with the preparations as and when we required
them. I would set a different goal for each day so that I would not feel the pressure.
Although there would be days when the study was less hectic, there would be days when
it would be challenging.

Exambazaar: Did you join any Coaching or Test Series to boost your preparation?

Shiv Kumar Sharma: I joined Dr. Bhatia's during my pre-foundation phase and attended
the regular classes and made notes. My classes at DBMCI were very flexible, therefore, I
was able to attend as many classes as I wanted. I also joined Marrow, which helped me
boost my confidence to a whole new level.

Exambazaar: What difficulties did you face during your preparation? And how did you
tackle them?

Shiv Kumar Sharma: There would be times when I would feel very demotivated and sad.
At these times, my parents and my sister were my strength and they would keep
encouraging me throughout my journey. I would talk to them daily. My seniors and my
friends were there as well. Since they had gone through and were going through what I
am going through, it felt nice talking to them and sharing my thoughts and perspective
with them.

Exambazaar: How important is it to write mock tests before the exam? And how regular
were you with them?

and Bhatia's online tests as well as offline tests. I also gave subject wise tests and grand
tests. In total, I have given around 44 online tests and 15 -16 offline tests. They are very
important, as they help you understand where you are lacking and how much time should
be spent on which questions.

Exambazaar: What advice would you give to future aspirants and upcoming Doctors?

Shiv Kumar Sharma: Have faith in yourself and your abilities. There is nothing you will not
be able to achieve if you have the will to do it. Be thorough with your own notes. Keep
updating your stack of notes and if you have issues and hurdles, don't back down. Ask
your seniors and teachers, they will help you.

joined Marrow an online preparation platform, their Question banks, videos, and quizzes
helped me a lot.

Exambazaar: What difficulties did you face during your preparation? And how did you
tackle them?

also very helpful since they make you habitual of the exam pattern. They help your
thinking patterns to develops in a way that you can remain very calm during the actual
exam. In the beginning, I gave 1 test per month but then it gradually increased it to 5 or 6
per month.

NEET PG Preparation Guide 29

Shobhit Garg: During my UG, the MCQ pattern had already begun. Therefore, we had one
MCQ paper in CPMT which was of a lot of help as it boosted my preparation. Our college
also gave us excellent clinical exposure and the faculty helped a lot with the NEET PG 2020
preparation. All in all, we were well prepared to face PG entrance exam, thanks to our
UG.

Exambazaar: Could you tell us how important are internships for medical students?

Shobit Garg: Doing a PG means you are completely locked in only one department or
specialization. But an internship gives you exposure to all the 19 subjects that hold
importance in the medical field. You gain knowledge and basics of all subjects in small
proportions, which is very important in the medical field. You get to work under doctors
of different specializations for 1 year, which helps in learning and getting a hold over
different skills. This is an opportunity of a lifetime, as after this one year, you must choose
a specialization.

Exambazaar: Where did you pursue your internship? Tell us a bit about your schedule
during the internship and your learnings. When did you start preparing?

Shobhit Garg: I am currently pursuing my internship at the King George's Medical College,
Lucknow as well. I began preparing for NEET PG 2020 last April. I would study for my
exams in the free time slots which I got during the internship. In the early periods of my
internship, I studied for 5-6 hours, but later I extended it to 10-12 hours a day.

Exambazaar: How did you prepare for NEET PG Entrance Exams? Did you join any
Coaching or Test Series to boost your preparation?

Shobhit Garg: I was a regular student of Dr. Bhatia Medical Coaching Institute. I attended
their classes during my 2nd and 3rd year. During my internship, I rejoined them and made
as many relevant notes that I could possibly make. I would compile their test series and

notes to prepare my own handwritten notes. After that, I would practice them twice
before any exam.

Exambazaar: What books and notes did you refer to and study from?

Shobhit Garg: I followed all the standard medical books I could lay my hand on. But after
joining my internship, I had limited time. Therefore, I started preparing my own notes,
and it is my suggestion to all the budding students that instead of following a standard
book during the internship, just focus on important topics and make your own
handwritten notes. It helps a lot.

Exambazaar: What difficulties did you face during your NEET PG 2020 preparation? And
how did you tackle them?

Shobhit Garg: Like any other medical student, I would also feel very frustrated that I don't
have enough time for preparation. Therefore, I tackled this by setting short term goals for
myself. For example, I would set a target to complete one topic in a week's time. Once
that would be done, I would move to the next goal. This kept me moving forward.

Exambazaar: How important is it to write mock tests before the NEET PG exam? And how
regular were you with them?

Shobhit Garg: Earlier I used to write the mock tests subject-wise. That helped me a lot in
finding my weaknesses and strengths. Later on, I switched to full-fledged mock tests
which consisted of 300 questions. Then I analyzed my mock tests, which helped me
understand which subjects required more attention in comparison to others. I would give
mock tests and grand tests on a weekly basis.

Exambazaar: What advice would you give to future aspirants and upcoming Doctors?
Would you give any advice for improvement of performance to those who have
attempted NEET PG and AIIMS PG multiple times already?

Shobhit Garg: Enjoy your college life, but along with that start reading the standard books
early on. There are online materials like Bhatia and others that you should take up in order
to know your standing and preparation level. Along with that, use their notes and make
your own set of notes. Clearing the basic concepts and theoretical knowledge is very
important. Take mock tests and solve as many questions as you can. It will boost your
confidence and clear all concepts for you.

Exambazaar: In your PG, which branch do you plan to join?

Shobhit Garg: I am planning to pursue Medicine from Dr. Maulana Azad Medical College.

5, whose sheer dedication and commitment towards his preparation helped him achieve
his goals. Get to know his journey towards success.

Exambazaar: Congratulations on your outstanding result. How did you feel after the
results were out and what were your family’s reactions like?

Aman Agrawal: It was unreal for me; I didn’t actually expect a rank like this. I got a phone
call from one of my friends, he informed me and I told him not to mess with me. I had
two friends with me, they were trying to calm me down as I was shaking. After which I
called my parents and they were crying on the phone. It was a very emotional moment.

Aman Agrawal: Both my parents are

doctors in Gwalior. They inspired me, the
kind of respect they gained from the
patients and the people around them, and
how they treated these people around them
inspired me to take up the path of a doctor.
Like them, I wanted to serve the people and
aid them to the best of my ability.

Exambazaar: Have you taken AIIMS PG or are you planning to take it?

Aman Agrawal: I was not able to appear for the AIIMS PG in November because of my
internship which ends in March. So to be eligible for AIIMS PG I needed to complete the
internship. Therefore, I am planning to give it in May this year.

Exambazaar: What was your rank during your NEET-UG? And which college had you
joined?

Aman Agrawal: My rank during my UG was 220 and I joined SMS Medical College, Jaipur.
I am thankful I joined this college as I got a lot of exposure and experience studying at
SMS.

Exambazaar: Does your undergraduate study form a major part of the PG exam syllabus?
Or is there significantly more you have to cover?

Aman Agrawal: NEET-PG was more about what you study over the past 4 and a half years
before your internship. So if you have done good preparation during your exams and you
studied with dedication, you will succeed. It is a process, you have to keep working and
learning. Then again, good books are important, and updating the information you know
is also important. Sometimes what you might have learned 2 years back could be a part
of the exam. Therefore, all the information you learn is important. I was not a very
studious person but I was dedicated and I studied with commitment during my

examination. I would do a lot of planning as well. For example, I would assign how much
time to give to my studies. My goal was to make each hour count.

Exambazaar: As you mentioned, you would make lots of notes and study from standard
books, could you tell us about some of these books you would refer to?

Aman Agrawal: The most important book is Robins for Pathology, it is really important.
All the images in the pathology section are always from Robins. So, if you have read Robins
two to three times in your second year itself, you are done with the major chunk of the
questions. Out of 300 questions, you get around 40 questions from pathology.

Love and Baileys is also a good book for Surgery.

I would also make my own notes based on these books. This helped me memorize the
information and learn it.

Exambazaar: Could you tell us how important is it for a medical student to do an

internship?

Aman Agrawal: It is very important and crucial for a medical student to do an internship.
This year, the kind of NEET PG paper we had was very clinically oriented. Earlier we had
questions about what we might have studied in books and our notes. But now they are
giving clinical scenarios. For example: “What would you do if the patient comes with these
symptoms, and what investigation would you do next” etc. So yes, an internship is very
important from my perspective, as it gives us the knowledge to deal with different kinds
of cases. This clinical approach also boosts our confidence as we know and we have
practically utilized the questions presented to us. This year we had long questions, so
students got apprehensive. If they would have calmly read them, they would have
understood what the questions were.

Exambazaar: How did you juggle the internship and your studies together? And when did
you start preparing?

Aman Agrawal: I started my NEET PG 2020 preparation in the 3rd year. Although, it was
during the pre-final year that I got very serious about it. I started taking notes and classes
apart from college. By the final year, I added everything together and updated all the
notes. I also used notes from Marrow and DBMCI to understand the competitive style of
questions. Hence, by the time I started my internship, all my notes were almost
completed. Therefore, I did not need to give too much time to each and everything. I had
a bank of notes to fall back on. As internships are very time consuming, having all my
handwritten notes really helped a lot.

Exambazaar: How important is it to write mock tests before the exam? And how regular
were you with them?

Aman Agrawal: Writing mock tests is very crucial. It is important because you want to
know where you stand before you take the exam. By taking them, you know exactly
where you stand. It also gives you a clear picture of your weaknesses and strengths. Then
you can start preparing according to sections that need more attention. When you give
NEET PG mock tests 10 to 15 times, you also understand how much time a certain section
might take. Time management and marking schemes become very clear once you attempt
the mock tests.

Exambazaar: In between preparation, there might have been difficult and stressful times.
How did you cope with them?

Aman Agrawal: Studying for 10 months straight is very stressful. So, there are a few things
I would do in order to cope with the pressure. Firstly, I would call home regularly at night
and talk to my parents, they would motivate and encourage me. Since they are doctors,
they have been through this. Therefore, their words were the most encouraging thing for
me. Secondly, we have a big group of friends, so we had at least one birthday every
month. Therefore, we would celebrate, and go out for the night. This made a huge impact
as it was like a stress buster for all of us.

Therefore, being from the Medical background, I

Exambazaar: How did you manage your time between internship and studies?

Yash Kallurwar: My internship would take place during the day. After my duty, I would
freshen up and study for my NEET PG. Since I had less time after my daily duties, I would
try to motivate myself a lot. I would always try to understand the concept and basics of
the subjects first and then dive into the important points.

Exambazaar: Could you tell us how important are internships for medical students?

Yash Kallurwar: I am currently pursuing my internship which would be over in the coming
days. Therefore, I can say from experience that an internship is the first window where
you get exposed to real cases. You get hands-on experience about the minor proceedings
in a hospital. Apart from that, it also serves the benefit of introducing you to each
department of the Medical field. Another benefit of an internship is that it also gives you
a real experience with patients and their problems.

Exambazaar: How did you prepare for PG Entrance Exams? Did you join any Coaching or
Test Series to boost your preparation?

Yash Kallurwar: I joined DBMCI and attended the majority of their lectures. I also joined
Marrow and utilized it for giving MCQs, Grand Tests and Mock tests. The notes from the
coaching were also very helpful in clearing out the basic concepts for many of the
subjects.

Exambazaar: What books and notes did you refer to and study from?

Yash Kallurwar: I used all the standard books recommended for the MBBS course. I would
recommend Robin’s and Cortran’s Pathologic Basics to the budding students for their
upcoming preparations. Apart from this, the standard books recommended by teachers
and seniors during the MBBS are really helpful.

parents and my friends stood by my side like a rock. I was also motivated by my fellow
classmates and mentors from DBMCI. They were very encouraging and supportive.

Exambazaar: How important is it to write mock tests before the exam? And how regular
were you with them?

Yash Kallurwar: Grand tests help you in analyzing your strengths and weaknesses. It
shows you the actual reality of your preparations and breaks any illusionist bubbles. I used
to give grand tests monthly. After that, I switched to 15 days of gap. It helps you to
understand where you stand among other students.

Exambazaar: What advice would you give to the future aspirants and upcoming Doctors?
Would you give any advice for improvement of performance to those who have
attempted NEET PG and AIIMS PG multiple times already?

Yash Kallurwar: My advice would be to start some serious preparations from the 2 nd year
itself. You can stick to the standard books, although taking it seriously is very crucial. Pay
attention to Pharma more and study Robin’s and Cortran’s Pathologic Basics. The book
itself covers most of the important topics. Also, prepare your notes, do MCQs.

Exambazaar: In the future, which branch do you plan to join?

Yash Kallurwar: I am a bit confused between Medicine and Radiodiagnosis. It is a lifetime

decision. Therefore, I am still pondering.

Exambazaar: Could you tell us how important are internships for medical students?

Amit Hegde: It is very important since it helps you in recognizing which specialty you are
interested in. It is very easy to study theory but the knowledge of your comfort zone is
known only when you apply it practically. Working in every department helps you in
learning a lot of the basics. It also helps you in gaining practical knowledge because not
every time can you solve your problems by turning the pages of your books.

Exambazaar: Where did you pursue your internship? Tell us a bit about your schedule
during the internship, and your learnings. When did you start preparing?

Amit Hegde: I pursued my internship from Bangalore Medical College. I did not study
much during the internship owing to a lack of time. My serious preparations started
once I joined DBMCI, after my internship was over.

Exambazaar: How did you prepare for PG Entrance Exams? Did you join any Coaching or
Test Series to boost your preparation?

Amit Hegde: After completing my internship, I joined DBMCI. This is when my

preparation gained momentum. I went through my notes weekly and started practicing
on platforms such as Marrow. Simultaneously I wrote my Grand Tests and completed
around 30-40 Mock tests to boost my preparations.

Exambazaar: What books and notes did you refer to and study from?

Amit Hegde: I made my notes in the last 8-9 months for most of the subjects. I made
notes from general textbooks for topics that were not covered in the coaching classes
which in turn I would use for my preparations.

Exambazaar: How important is it to write mock tests before the exam? And how regular
were you with them?

Amit Hegde: It gives you a reality check about your preparations, it also helps you in
knowing your weaknesses and strengths. The only thing you have to do is, correctly
analyze your results and then improvise accordingly.

Exambazaar: What advice would you give to the future aspirants and upcoming
Doctors? Would you give any advice for improvement of performance to those who have
attempted NEET PG and AIIMS PG multiple times already?

Amit Hegde: My only advice is to believe in yourself and make sure that you put your
100% efforts into it. Also, you should start your studies for these exams right from your
MBBS days. If you have prepared well during your MBBS days, you are just left with
putting all the information you attained in order.

Exambazaar: In the future, which branch do you plan to join?

Amit Hegde: I have not decided it till now, but I think I will go for General surgery.

Dr. Arka Prabha Chattopadhyay NEET PG 2020

Rank 46 Interview

Excited and Content with his hard work finally paying off, here we have Dr. Arka Prabha
Chattopadhyay from Kolkata. He is NEET PG 2020 Rank 46 and AIIMS PG rank 70. Here
you have his NEET PG journey and future aspirations. Read our interview to know his
journey:

Exambazaar: Congratulations on your fantastic results. How were you feeling when your
results were out and you found out you were Rank 46, and what were your family's
reactions like?

Arka Prabha Chattopadhyay: I was elated that I had managed to get Rank 46, but frankly
speaking, I was a bit disappointed as well. I was hoping to get a top 20 Rank. That said,
my family was jubilant of course and I was happy that I was able to make my entire family
proud.

Exambazaar: Why did you choose the medical field out all? Any specific reason?

Arka Prabha Chattopadhyay: I think the purest form of service to mankind is given by a
doctor, and I wanted to be someone who could help others in the direst hour of need and
that is, truly speaking, the job of a doctor.

Exambazaar: Have you attempted AIIMS PG or any other exams?

Arka Prabha Chattopadhyay: Yes, I am AIIMS PG Rank 70 and PGI Rank 21.

Exambazaar: How important is an internship for a medical student?

Arka Prabha Chattopadhyay: Internships are very important. My internship attempt

fetched me an All India Rank 460 in NEET PG 2019. They are learning experiences that all
medical students should have. The training experience that is gained from an internship
is something you will never experience anywhere else. Therefore, one should not bunk
their internships. Many people skip the internship cycle with the view of studying for
exams. But with the recent trend having more practical questions, I would advise against
it. A better approach would be to ask for a friend's help for the night duties. During the
last two months during exams, night duties do take a toll on both physical and mental
health, which could compromise your exam.

Exambazaar: What was your rank during your NEET-UG and which college had you
joined?

Arka Prabha Chattopadhyay: My Rank during my NEET-UG was somewhere around 8000,
I can't remember exactly. Also, I did my MBBS from N.R.S. medical college, Kolkata. I will
forever be indebted to them for whatever I have learned in the field of medicine so far.

NEET PG Preparation Guide 56

Exambazaar: Where had you pursued your internship? Also, could you tell us a bit about
your schedule during that time?

Arka Prabha Chattopadhyay: My internship took place in N.R.S medical college itself. The
schedule was grueling in certain departments and comparatively lighter in others. We
learned a lot of procedures like central line placenta from our seniors. Sometimes we
were working 48 hours at a stretch. However, our seniors were very helpful, therefore,
my co-interns and I managed everything quite well. Not all days would be grilling and
tough, therefore, we could study at least 3-4 hours for 3-4 days per week. I would say,
that is all you need to crack NEET PG while doing an internship. My preparation started in
April 2018 for my NEET PG 2019. After giving NEET PG 2019, I stopped studying and in
fact, took up a medicine seat with my NEET PG 2019 Rank 460. It was later that I realized
that I had chosen the wrong stream for myself. Therefore, I started preparing again from
July 2019 for November central exams and NEET PG 2020.

Exambazaar: Did you join any coaching or test series to boost your preparations?

Arka Prabha Chattopadhyay: I never joined any classroom coaching as I could never
concentrate for 12 hours at a stretch. For me, 2-3 hours was the upper limit. I joined the
Marrow plan B during my internship and upgraded to plan C in August 2019. Their
question banks are extremely well made. In my case, I had decided to read guide books
only. I had joined DBMCI's essential test series and I can say it from experience that their
grand tests are the best simulators of the original NEET PG pattern. Even their PGI and
AIIMS pattern tests are very good.

Exambazaar: How important is it to write mock tests and grant tests before the exam?
Also, how regular were you with it?

Arka Prabha Chattopadhyay: I wrote mocks in every 3-4 days. They helped in improving
my speed and accuracy. They also helped me know the exact number of attempts in the

Exambazaar is the largest education discovery platform in India & provides comprehensive information about

NEET PG Preparation Guide 57

paper that would yield maximum marks for me, especially for PGI and the new AIIMS
pattern. If you don't give regular mocks, your real exam won't get you the desired result.

Exambazaar: What advice would you like to give to future aspirants and your juniors who
want to attempt NEET PG or AIIMS PG in the future?

Arka Prabha Chattopadhyay: Study from the standard textbooks for MBBS. During your
internship read guidebooks or notes, and don't change your source. Practice solving
MCQs, at least 50 per day and give at least 7-8 grand tests per month. Once you are a
veteran of 40-50 grand tests ( after 5-6 months), you will not feel the pressure of writing
a competitive exam at all and at the time of the NEET PG exam, it will seem to you as if
you are going with the flow of a mock test and your marks will improve tremendously.

Exambazaar: What are your plans for the future?

Arka Prabha Chattopadhyay: I had joined MD medicine through NEET PG 2019. However,
I resigned after two months and prepared for 3-4 months again. This helped me crack
AIIMS PG. Therefore, currently, I am pursuing MD Radio-diagnosis from AIIMS Patna and
I have no plans of seating in NEET counselling.

Exambazaar: Congratulations on your outstanding result. How did you feel after the
results were out and what were your family’s reactions like?

Khushboo Tekriwal: Thank you so much! We were actually not expecting the results to
be out so soon. A friend and I were sitting and talking about our lives after the internship
when we received the notification that the results were out. At first, we didn't believe it.
Then we searched different Facebook groups which confirmed the fact that results are
out. We were both frozen, so we decided we will not see results ourselves. A common

friend looked at the result for both of us and he told us our ranks an hour later. I was
shocked, to say the least.

Exambazaar: Why did you choose Medical as your career? Any reasons behind it?

Khushboo Tekriwal: Initially, I was not personally aiming to become a doctor, but it was
my father's dream. Later on, when I understood his point of view and his motivation, it
became my dream as well.

Exambazaar: Have you taken the AIIMS PG or PGIMER?

Khushboo Tekriwal: No, I am not eligible at this point, as I have not completed my
internship yet.

Exambazaar: Was this your first attempt or have you given the exam before?

Exambazaar: What was your rank during your NEET-UG? And what are you doing at
present?

Khushboo Tekriwal: During my NEET-UG, my All India Rank was 7600 and currently I am
an intern at Patna Medical College and Hospital.

Exambazaar: Could you tell us how important are internships for medical students?

Khushboo Tekriwal: Internships are definitely important for practical life as well as AIIMS
PG. For NEET PG, I think we can do without it as well. That said, internships can definitely
keep you motivated throughout the preparation phase as teachers, seniors, and
colleagues don't let you lose track and faith in yourself.

Exambazaar: Where did you pursue your internship? Tell us a bit about your schedule
during the internship, and your learnings. When did you start preparing?

Khushboo Tekriwal: I did my entire MBBS training at Patna Medical College and Hospital,
Patna. As such, I didn't have any strict schedule. It was very flexible and short term. I

myself calm, relaxed and study without giving up my normal routine.

Exambazaar: Did you join any Coaching or Test Series to boost your preparation?

Khushboo Tekriwal: I have used all the available resources although I couldn't use it
effectively. To name a few, I joined DAMS in 2015 and side by side I was attending classes
by DBMCI. I took classes, test series and mock tests by Marrow and Unacademic as well.

Exambazaar: What difficulties did you face during your

preparation? And how did you tackle them?

Khushboo Tekriwal: The only difficulty I faced was

avoiding unwanted stress. I tackled it by making myself
calm and talking to my loved ones, which included my
mom and sister specifically.

Exambazaar: How important is it to write mock tests

before the exam? And how regular were you with them?

Khushboo Tekriwal: If anyone were to ask me what I

would have done a month prior to the exam, I would say
appear for Mock tests. I would sit at least for 3.5 hrs in front of a screen. I took all the
mocks which were available for free, these mock tests gave me enough motivation to
keep going till the end.

NEET PG Exam Day Tips

1. Know the syllabus

To crack any exam, the candidates must know the syllabus thoroughly. Getting yourself
acquainted with the syllabus helps you in efficient planning for the exam. You can choose
your strong and weak sections and accordingly work on it.

2. Focus is the key

Focus is the most important key to crack any exam, be it competitive or school based. It
is advisable for you to be focused and determined during the exams, don’t let noises
distract you.

3. Effective management of stress

Stress is the enemy of many of us especially students. Take deep breaths before entering
the exam venue. Stay calm and cool. Try doing some relaxing activities so that you escape
from the fear of the exam.

4. Prepare for the Worst

NEET PG is known to set unpredictable questions for students. There are many instances
when NEET has twisted the question which creates havoc in the mind of students.
Therefore, try to revise and practice through different methods such that this
complication does not create panic for you.

5. Physical Health should not be overlooked

It is seen many times that students who are preparing for NEET PG also have their
internships running parallel to it. It is not easy to attend 7-8 hours long duty and then
study straight for 6-7 hours. This routine often burdens the mind and body of the
aspirants. Therefore, it is very important that you take proper and balanced diet before
the exam. Taking ample amount of sleep is also important.

6. Work on your Accuracy

The total questions asked in the exam is 180, which need to be answered in 3 hours. This
pressure makes students commit mistakes that can cost them their selection. The exam
gives -1 for each wrong answer which cannot be taken lightly. Therefore, it is very
important that the students are a vigilante and attentive in the exam hall.

7. Revision should not be overlooked

Revision is the most important aspect of any exam whether school exam or any
competitive exam. In a hurry, many a times students overlook mistakes that might have
taken place within their answer. Therefore, it is important to revisit the answers they have
written.
