Literature Review

According to Kate Houston and Libbie Blanchard (2020) a literature review is a comprehensive
summary of previous research on a topic. The literature review survey scholarly articles, books,
and other sources relevant to particular area of research. The review should enumerate , describe,
summarize, objectively evaluate and clarify this previous research. It should give a theoretical
base for the research and help the author determine the nature of your research. The literature
review acknowledges the work of previous researchers, and so doing, the reader assures that your
work has been well conceived. It is assumed that by mentioning a previous work in the field of
study, the author has read, evaluated, and assimilated that work into the work at hand.

A literature review has four main goals:

Survey-literature review demonstrates a formality with body of knowledge and establishes the
credibility of your work. It identifies areas of prior scholarship, it places each source in context
of its contribution to the understanding of the specific issues, area of research or theory under
review.

Synthesise-It summaries prior research and says how your project is linked to other research.
Research synthesis is the process of combing the results of multiple primary research studies
aimed at testing the same conceptual hypothesis. It aims to generate new knowledge by combing
and comparing the results of multiple studies on a given topic. Synthesize aims to draw
conclusion about the findings in the literature so that you can identify how the literature address
your research question.

Critical Analyse- Analyses information gathered by identifying gaps in current knowledge by

showing limitations of thesis and points of view; and by formulating areas for further research
and reviewing areas of controversy; it integrates and summarises what is known about a subject.
The goal of a literature analysis is to broaden and deepen your understanding of your work of
literature.

Presentation -This outline the skills related to the various steps involved in conducting and
presenting a thorough and systematic review of the literature , including identifying and
retrieving relative material and sources as well as analysing evaluating and synthesizing ideas
found in literature. It demonstrate that you have learnt from others and that your research is a
starting point for new ideas.
