Abstract. Automobile Manufacturers are always in a process of developing

new technologies or alter the previous ones to improve upon the performance of
their vehicles. Engine performance is one of the major areas to increase perfor-
mance of vehicles. To increase the power and torque from the same capacity of
engines Honda came up with Intelligence Variable Timing and Lift Electronic
Control (i-VTEC) is used to increase power and torque as it can control timing
valve. i-VTEC can increase performance of engine that sets to increase the
engine torque and power for same input parameters. The objective of this re-
search is to analyze and compare performance of active system and non-active
system on provided test engine based on torque and power.

The performance parameters were studied by OBD2 sensor on the test engines.
The various readings were studied and curves were plotted to show variation in
performance.

The test outcomes demonstrated that greatest torque from engine utilizing dy-
namic system is 189.3 Nm of torque at 4900 Rpm and most extreme torque
from non-dynamic framework is 202.8 Nm at 5350 Rpm. The torque of engine
utilizing dynamic system is 3.67% higher than non-dynamic system. The most
extreme power from motor utilize dynamic framework is 180.3Hp at 6910rpm
and greatest power from motor non-dynamic framework is 163.8Hp at 7020
rpm. The motor power utilizing dynamic system is 10.07% higher than non-
dynamic system motor.

1. Background

Internal ignition engine changes over chemical energy to mechanical energy. The air/
fuel blend volume that is taken in to the cylinder contrasted with the cylinder volume
!2

is known as volumetric efficiency of an ic engine. Essentially the past framework on

car burning is unpredictable. To produce most extreme power at low RPM is required
an different setting in comparison to that we need to create greatest power at high
Rpm.The setting of engine for low Rpm will lessen the amount of energy required by
engine and torque while keep it running at high Rpm. I-VTEC (Intelligent-Variable
Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control) is a valve prepare framework created by
Honda to enhance the volumetric efficiency of a 4-stroke internal combustion engine.
The I-VTEC framework utilizes two camshaft profiles and electronically chooses
between them in this way enhancing torque and power execution. In view of this
foundation, it is important to comprehend the impact of dynamic and non-dynamic I-
VTEC to the gas engines execution of the test Engine[1].

2. Objective of the Study

The research objective is to compare and analyze the performance of an active and
non-active i-VTEC system on given test engine .

A 4-stroke SI engine is used with the cylinder volume of 2354 cc,An OBD2 sensor is
used..

3.3. Engine Test

In order to conduct the test data, an OBD2 sensor in used and the required data was
recorded in two conditions. Firstly, when the i-vtec system of vehicle is active. Sec-
ondly, when the VTC cable from ECU is tempered in order to disable i-vtech system.
Engine is operated at different conditions to record the required data.

3.4. Data Record

Power and torque curves were plotted by running the vehicle at normal condition at
1500rpm and then pressing on the accelerator pedal to reach through 7500 rpm and
then allow it to roll back to normal. The result can be seen on the screen of OBD2
sensor..

4. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

4.1. Engine Torque

Analysis between active inactive i-VTEC system based on torque shows that the most
elevated torque produced by dynamic framework is 210.9 Nm at 4800 Rpm and the
highest torque created by non-dynamic system is 199.2 Nm at 5500 Rpm. On lower
and higher revolutions(rpms), torques created by dynamic framework are higher than
torques produced by non-dynamic framework. As the outcome, the mean normal es-
timation of torque that came about because of motor utilizing dynamic framework is
!5

202.13 Nm. On other hand, by the means of normal estimation of torque that was
recorded by non-dynamic system is 191.21 Nm. The motor torque utilizing dynamic
is 5.8% higher than non-dynamic I-VTEC motor. This happens on the grounds that
the dynamic is propelling the admission valves shutting time and opened the admis-
sion valves for longer term in light of motor burdens. The volumetric efficiency is
seen to be enhanced by the usage of active system. The most astounding torque ac-
complished in view of manual book is 210 Nm at 4500 Rpm.The deviation could be
in account of various reasons.

4.2. Engine Power

The maximum power created by dynamic I-vtec framework is 180.3Hp at 6900 Rpm
and the same produced by non-dynamic I-vtec is 163.8Hp at 7100 Rpm. From the
graph, it appears at low and high pivot points, dynamic framework seems to be com-
ing about higher power than non-dynamic framework. As the outcome, the mean
normal estimation of energy that came about because of motor utilizing dynamic is
119.35 Hp. the mean normal estimation of energy that came about because of motor
non-dynamic is 108 Hp. The motor power utilizing dynamic is 10.07% higher than
non-dynamic I-VTEC motor. This happens in light of the fact that the dynamic is pro-
pelling the admission valves shutting time and opened the admission valves for longer
length in light of motor burdens. The volumetric productivity is enhanced by expand-
ing measure of the air that is breathed in to ignition chamber which coming about to
expanding power. The highest power that can be accomplished in view of manual
book is 184 PS at 7000 Rpm. The tried motor gives littler power an incentive than the
torque in light of manual book on the grounds that the motor utilized for testing isn't
new motor so motor execution is diminishing.

5. CONCLUSION

The greatest engine torque utilizing dynamic framework is 210.9 Nm (4900 Rpm) and
extreme torque from engine non-dynamic system is 199.2 Nm(5350 Rpm). The en-
gine torque utilizing dynamic system is 5.8% higher than non-dynamic system.
Torque will increase if the engine utilizing dynamic framework.

The greatest power from engine utilize dynamic I-VTEC framework is 180.3Hp
at(6910 Rpm) and extreme power from engine non-dynamic Iis 163.8Hp(7020 Rpm).
The engine control utilizing dynamic system is 10.07% higher than non-dynamic
framework. Power at different rpms is more if the engine is utilizing dynamic frame-
work.
