1100 Series 51 lssue 2

New tooling for ai r in fuel and fuel pressure tests March 2007

This service bulletin applies to 1100 Series six and four cylinder engines models PJ, NH and NJ.
Dueto Perkins continuous product improvement program, the test for air in fuel has been improved.
A new fuel pressure test has been introduced.
Before beginning any work on the fuel system, you must read and understand the following information.

Cautions:
• Before beginning any work on the fuel system, reter to Operation and Maintenance Manual, «General
Hazard lnformation and High Pressure Fuel Unes" for safety information.
• Reter to Systems Operation, Testing and Adjusting, "Cieanliness of Fuel System Components" for detailed
information on the standards of c/eanliness that must be observed during ali work on the fuel system.
Note: Ensure that the tools are stored with the caps in place. Store the tools in a clean plastic bag.
1 Ensure that the fuel levei in the fuel tank is above the levei of the suction pipe in the fuel tank.
2 lnspect the fuel system thoroughly for leaks. lf necessary, repair the fuel system.
3 Check alllow pressure fuellines from the fuel tank for restrictions. Replace any damaged components.
4 Instai! new fuel filters. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manuais, SEBU8119 and SEBU8172 for the
correct procedures.

5 Remove the connection on the low pressure fuel pipe (A 1) from the top of the secondary fuel filter base (A4 ).
lnsert the plastic end of the connection into a suitable container (A3).
6 Fita suitable tube (A2} to the top of the secondary fuel filter base (A4). lnsert the other end of the tube into
a suitable container (A3).

13 Hand prime the fuel system to flush fuel through the tools in order to minimize the risk of contaminating the
system by introducing dirt from the service tool. Continue to prime the system until fuel free from air and
contaminants flows through the plastic tube into the container (C3). Refer to Operation and Maintenance
Manuais, SEBU8119 and SEBU8172, "Fuel System- Prime" for the correct procedures.
14 Remove the suitable plastic tube from the pressure gauge assembly (84).
15 Connect the low pressure fuelline (C2) to the pressure gauge assembly (84).
16 Ensure that the service tools are secured and clear of rotating parts.
17 Start the engine. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manuais, SE8U81 19 and SE8U8172 for the correct
procedures.
Air in fuel test
1 Run the engine high idle.
2 Run the engine for two minutes. There should be no ai r in the fuel flow through the sight tube. Small bubbles
that are spaced more than 2.5 cm (1 .0 inch) are acceptable. Do not manipulate the connections during the test
for the ai r in fuel.
3 The presence of large bubbles ora continuous stream of bubbles indicates a leak before the transfer pump.
4 lnvestigate potentialleaks and rectify any potentialleaks in the low pressure fuel system between the fuel
tank and the inlet at the fuel transfer pump.
5 lnspect the primary filter base for damaged connections. lnspect the main fuel inlet connection from the fuel
tank. Ensure that ali the connections are correctly installed. lf necessary, replace the connections.
6 Dispose of the test fuel containers and the fuel. Do not reuse the test fuel.
Fuel pressure test
Note: The pressure at the fuel transfer pump should not be measured when the engine is cranked. The
pressure will be low and inconsistent. The engine should still start even if transfer pressure is zero. The fuel
injection pump will deliver residual fuel in the fuel injection pump and the secondary fuel filter.
1 Run the engine ata speed of 1000 rpm. Th e fuel pressure should be in the range of 300 to 550 kPa (44 to
80 psi).
2 lf the fuel pressure is more than 600 kPa (87 psi), there is a problem with the pressure regulator for the fuel
transfer pump. Replace the fuel transfer pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, RENR9983 and
RENR9525, "Fuel Transfer Pump- Remove" for the correct procedures.
3 lfthe pressure is less than 300 kPa (44 psi), check for restrictions in the low pressure fuellines between the
fuel transfer pump, the ECM and the secondary fuel filter base. Check for excessive air in the fuel. lf no faults
are found, renew the fuel transfer pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, RENR9983 and RENR9525,
"Fuel Transfer Pump- Remove" for the correct procedures.
Remove the service tooling (81) and (82). Reconnect the low pressure fuelline (C2) to t he fuel transfer pump
outlet (C1 ).
Nõtê: EiiSUre tha t the tools are stored with the caps in place. Storetiie tools in a clean plastic bag.
