Answer Key

Automobile Engineering

Course Name: Automotive transmission

Part – A

1. Types of transmission system.

 Automatic Transmission (AT)
 Manual Transmission (MT)
 Automated Manual Transmission (AM)
 Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT)

2. Materials used for clutch parts.

Various materials have been used for the disc-friction facings, including asbestos in the
past. Modern clutches typically use a compound organic resin with copper wire facing or
a ceramic material

3. Slip in fluid coupling.

Slip of fluid coupling defined as the ratio of the difference of speed of driving shaft and
driven shaft to the speed of the driving shaft.

4. Need of stator in the torque converter

The stator sends the fluid returning from the turbine to the pump. This improves the
efficiency of the torque converter.

5. Advantage of epicyclic gear train.

Its greater speed radial and axial load offers reliability and robustness, minimizing the
misalignment of the gear. In addition, uniform transmission and low vibrations at different loads
provide a perfect repeatability.

6. Advantage of epicyclic gear box.

Power transmission efficiency will be quite good as compared to
traditional gearboxes i.e. higher proportion of input energy will be delivered with the help
of such gearing arrangement. Planetary gear system will have higher torque
transmission capability and will have lower inertia.

7. Need for automatic transmission.

The main difference is that automatic cars don't have a clutch pedal. Manual transmission cars
have five or six gears, plus reverse, giving you full control over how the car performs.
8. Differentiate CVT and manual transmission.
CVT relies on a belt and pulley system that provides an infinite number of ratios. In other
words, the transmission never shifts. Generally speaking, a car equipped with a CVT is
smoother to drive than an equivalent model fitted with a regular automatic transmission
9. Layout of hydrostatic drive system.

10. Principle of electric torque conversion.

When coupled with an electric circuit, the magnetic flux interacting with the current in the
circuit would produce a force or torque on a mechanically movable part. ... The product of the
torque and speed (the mechanical power) equals the active component of the product of the
emf and current.
