Evidence: Consolidation activity

Stage 1: The person I admire the most

A. What to do?

Write a biography of the person you admire the most. This person can be, for
example, a public figure, a celebrity, a politician, a world leader or someone
close to you, a relative.

Note: The person you choose cannot be the same chosen for Evidence 3
of this learning activity.

B. How to do it?

You need to carry out some research in order to collect the necessary
information for writing the biography. If the person chosen is a public figure,
you can surf the web in order to get the details you are going to include. On
the contrary, if the person chose is someone you know personally, you can set
up an interview in order to ask the person the questions you may have about
his / her life.

Here is an outline we suggest following for writing the biography. We have


chosen Charles Darwin (public figure), an influential scientist of the
nineteenth century, as example for the outline.

1. Introduction

Next, I will talk about one of the most important scientists in


Colombia, known throughout the world for having developed the
vaccine against malaria.

From a young age he was a great admirer of Louis Pasteur and


had a great interest in virology.

At present he has continued to work on relevant investigations in


order to provide aid to the world.
2. Who is he?

Manuel Elkin Patarroyo is a Colombian immunologist doctor of


recognized worldwide prestige, having obtained a synthetic
vaccine for malaria from the field of immunology and virology.

3. Early life and education.


Manuel Elkin Patarroyo Murillo, was born on November 3, 1949, in
the Colombian municipality of Ataco, belonging to the department
of Tolima.

After completing his basic studies, he entered the National


University of Colombia to study Medicine.

Once he graduated in 1970, Patarroyo devoted himself fully to


research in different institutions, both from his homeland and
abroad, such as Sweden and the United States.

Since 1967, he began working in immunology and virology,
specialties that led him to become, even without obtaining his
professional title, a fellow of the Rockefeller University and
Foundation and Yale University, later the Karolinska Institute.

4. Family
Manuel Elkin Patarroyo was born into a working family, his father
was the police sergeant, Manuel Patarroyo Leyva and his mother
Julia Murillo was a woman who fought to give their 11 children a
good future.

In 1970 he married the pediatrician María Cristina Gutiérrez, with
whom he had three children, Manuel Alfonso, María Cristina and
Carlos Gustavo; two of which are also dedicated to medicine.

5. What are your achievements?

1984 / Founded and directed the Institute of Immunology of the


National University of Colombia.
1986 / He manages to synthesize the first vaccine against malaria.
1990 / Awarded by the Swedish Nobel Academy with the Prize for
Excellence in Latin American research.
1993 / Assign the exploitation rights of the SPF66 vaccine to the
OMS.
5. What are your achievements?

1994 / Awarded the Prince of Asturias Award for Scientific and


Technical Research.
1994 / Robert-Koch Prize.
1997 / Officially receives Spanish nationality.
2001 / He reached an agreement to carry out part of his research
at the Public University of Navarra.
2008 / Design a new early diagnosis of uterine cancer with just a
drop of blood.

6. Arguments

I chose Manuel Elkin Patarroyo because I have always admired


him as a human being and a professional.
Patarroyo has raised the name of Colombia, demonstrating that
with commitment and dedication it is possible to achieve
everything that is proposed.
Manuel Elkin with his knowledge has contributed to all humanity
and regardless of his age he still continues to do so.
7. Conclusions

Through this activity I got to know more aspects of the life of one
of the people that I admire the most for his contribution to
humanity.

Stage 2: My admiration for…

A. What to do?

In this section, you will record a tape or video in which you orally present the
person you chose in Section 1. For this part of the evidence you need to
present the biography as well as explain and illustrate the reasons why you
admire this person.

B. How to do it?

Record an audio or a video in the device of your preference. Before start the
recording, you need to organize the information you are going to introduce.
Your presentation has to include the following aspects:

1. An introduction.
2. A description of the biography.
3. Arguments and illustrations supporting your admiration for this person.
4. A conclusion.
5. Sources (In the event you consulted any articles, the web, journals, etc.)

Note: During the presentation you need to include the appropriate


signpost language for oral presentations and also some of the
vocabulary related to responsibility and leadership.
Stage 3: Submitting my evidence
When you finish your work, send the files to your instructor through the platform
as follows:

1. Click the title of this evidence.

the files are attached.
3. Leave a comment for the instructor (optional).
