1.) A study of iron deficiency among infants compared randomly chosen samples of infants
following different feeding regiments. One group contained breast-fed infants, while the
children in another group were fed a standard baby formula without any iron supplements.
Here are the results of blood hemoglobin levels at 12 months of age.
Group Sample size (n) x̄ s
Breast-fed 23 13.3 1.7
Formula 19 12.4 1.8
a. Construct an 80% confidence interval for the mean difference in hemoglobin level between
the two populations of infants. Show the 4 steps as you answer the question. (8 points)

b. Is there significant evidence at the 20% level that the mean hemoglobin level is different
among breast-fed and formula-fed babies? You do not need to check the conditions again,
but you should state your hypotheses (4 pts.)
2. The pesticide diazinon is commonly used to treat infestations of the German cockroach,
Blattella germanica. A study investigated the persistence (as measured by percent of pests
killed) of this pesticide on various types of surfaces. Researchers applied a 0.5% emulsion of
diazinon to glass and plasterboard surfaces. After 14 days, they placed 18 cockroaches on each
surface and recorded the number that died within 48 hours. On glass, 9 cockroaches died, while
on plasterboard, 14 died.

a. Is there a significant evidence to show that diazinon performs better on the plasterboard
surface compared to glass? Carry out an appropriate test with α = 0.05 by showing the 4
steps to help you answer this question. (8 points)

b. Describe a Type I Error and the related consequences in context of this problem. (2 pts.)

c. What is the probability of committing a Type I error? (1 pt.)
