Findings:
This study found out that the nature of the Cebuano
novels developed from the region's long history of narrative
tradition and from the writers’ concept of the novel as a
story embellished with opiaod The novel was a logical cul-
mination of the region's narrative tradition; hence, it em
dodied various influences from the earlier narratives like the
conventions of heroic quest and romantic love from the orally
transmitted indigenous tales, the functions of didacticiem from
the Christian ethical guidebooks and of entertainment from the
linambay both of which were dominant narratives during the
sh period, social realism from Rizal's no’
alistic temper from the writings of Vicente Sotto and hi
temporaries, and various thematic and technical influences from
the “ebuano translations of western and Tagalog novels. The
writsra' concept of the nature of the novel, on the other hand,
was revealed in the etymology of sugilambong, the Cebuano tern
used to describe the novels. Sugilambong means an embellished

the novel as a lengthy narrative embellished with episodes.
During the period studied, it was found out thet the
Cebuano novels underwent changes in subject matter and nerre-
tive techniques. ‘The changes were effects of the change in
the interest of the novelists and were observed between the

In 1928 to 1935, the novelists wanted to communicate
a vision of an ideal state of life and affairs in Cebu. They
wanted to give meaning to Cebuano life by reviving the pai
and asseiling undesirable foreign influences into native
culture. In contrast, in 1936-1950, the novelists wanted to
experiment with new techniques in writing the novels. Bereft
of the vieion of the previous novelists, they wrote entertain-
ing novele incidentally imbued with moralisms to give the
novels some degree of seriousness. This difference in interest

The period 1928 to 1935 saw the writing of three types
of novels: the epic novels on Cebu's indigenous past, the
satirical novele on Spanish and American influences in
Fhilippine culture, and the entertaining novels of adventure.
The narrative techniques in these novels were characterised by

imesThe period 1936 to 1950 saw the writing of novels on
legal cases and detective stories, novels on the supernatural,
novels on personal search, novels on history, and novels on
social problens. TNese novels shared some aspects of the simpi-
city of narrative techniques observed in the novels of the
previous period. However, some innovations were evident: the
novelists adopted the structure of the western "whodunnits,” and
experinented with psychology, introspection, and complicated
handling of point of view. The most important novels of this
period were the novels on personal search which described con-
tem rary Cebuano experiences and realitics.
