Glaive of Absorption

Weapon, legendary (requires attunement)

In its “vacant” state, this weapon appears as an ordinary though ornate polearm. Although a detect magic spell or
more powerful magics will determine that this is a magical item, an identify spell does not determine its properties.
Unlike other magic items, handling the item does not give a character the sense that something is extraordinary
about it (unlike most magic items). In fact, it seems a bit chintzy, as if it was intended as an ornamental weapon.

In this “vacant” state, this weapon attacks as a magical weapon, except that it is at disadvantage for attacking
creatures who otherwise could not be hit with a similar non-magical weapon, and those creatures are also
resistant to its damage (or immune if the creature is already resistant to the damage).

Only when the glaive is brought in contact with another magical weapon, whether or not that other magic weapon
requires attunement, can the glaive be attuned to. During the attunement process, the magical properties of the
second weapon are transferred completely and utterly to the glaive, and the other magic item loses all of its
magical properties and is no longer a magical weapon. To transfer the properties of a subsequent magical weapon,
the glaive must be re-attuned, and any properties previously absorbed are completely lost, and the glaive only
exhibits the magical properties of the latest absorbed weapon.

If the weapon being absorbed has magical properties that aren’t compatible with a glaive as weapon, attunement
fails. If the secondary weapon is sentient, attunement fails. There is a general 20% (minus the character’s level)
chance that attunement fails. If attunement fails for any reason, the secondary magic item loses its magical
properties without transferring to the glaive. Each time that this occurs, the character doing the attuning ages 1%
of their maximum expected lifespan for their race as part of their life-essence is exhausted as the magic short-
circuits as it uses the character’s body as a conduit to transition from one weapon to the other. For example, a
human ages 1 year, and a gnome would age 5 years.
