Ribbons of Borrowing

Wonderous Item, legendary (requires attunement)

This is a set of 2 blood-stained ribbons. When one ribbon is wrapped around a non-magical weapon, and the other
ribbon is wrapped around a magical weapon, a character can hold both wrapped weapons together to attune to
the ribbons. After attunement, as long as the now-magical weapon is on the person attuned to the ribbons, and as
long as both ribbons remain wrapped around their respective weapons, the non-magical weapon exhibits the
magical properties of the other weapon, and the originally magical weapon temporarily loses those properties. It
takes an action to unwrap or wrap a ribbon around a weapon, and once one weapon is unwrapped, each weapon
returns to its original state. Attunement is required each time the ribbons are used in this way.

If the magical weapon being borrowed has magical properties that are not compatible with the receiving non-
magical weapon, attunement fails (for example, an Oathbow could not transfer its magical properties to a non-
magical weapon that could not be used for a ranged attack). If the magical weapon is sentient, attunement fails.
There is also a general 20% chance (minus the attuning character’s level) that attunement fails. If attunement fails
for any reason, the character doing the attuning ages 1% of their maximum expected lifespan for their race as part
of their life-essence is exhausted as the magic short-circuits as it uses the character’s body as a conduit to
transition from one weapon to the other. For example, a human ages 1 year, and a gnome would age 5 years.
