What is this book about?
If you're thinking about going freelance, there are a lot of things to consider beside the joy of
becoming your own boss. There's a reason why people at the top of successful businesses get
paid as much as they do, and that is responsibility.

I‟m going to try to reach some important matters, especially for talented designers who are
thinking about taking it to another level. I‟ve structured this book in two parts, both extremely
useful for freelancers. I‟m sure you‟re gonna find some valuable information in here, so feel free
to send us some feedback or to share your experience as a freelancer.

1. Thinking about Going Freelance? Here's a Few Tips

If you're the boss, the buck stops with you. You're in charge of finances, marketing, customer
service and human resources, even if the only person you're employing is yourself. You have to
be motivated, manage your workload and keep your customers happy. Even with the freedom to
work in your pajamas, being your own boss is a lot of hard work.
That said, if you take the time to plan carefully and put into place some of the best practices right
from the start, going freelance can be great. Follow these tips and you'll never have to be up for a
nine o'clock meeting again, unless of course, you want to.

Become a Business Owner

You know you have the skills necessary to succeed and you're familiar with design industry
practices, but becoming a successful business owner takes more than talent alone. Typically,
working for yourself requires you to register as a business in order for you to pay appropriate
taxes, as well as develop policies on how you will conduct yourself.

The two most common reasons that small businesses fail are poor management (due to lacking
skills) and under-capitalization. To avoid these pitfalls, it's essential to plan properly for your
new lifestyle. Becoming a successful freelancer takes complete commitment. It may seem
surprising but you will have less time for your personal life at first, so be prepared for this.
Assess the advantages and disadvantages of working for yourself to find out if you are really
ready.

Hire an Accountant

Managing your finances is often the most difficult part of going freelance. Accounting requires a
whole new skill set that may be completely new to you. You need to decide where to price
yourself in order for your business to be viable, and then deal with invoicing, expenses and taxes,
as well as your wage. Your business needs to make enough money to sustain itself, and make a
profit. Don't confuse turnover (all the money you pay into your business account) with profit
(how much is left when all your expenses are paid). If all of this is already starting to sound a
little confusing (and believe, me it's just the tip of the iceberg), then hire an accountant and free
yourself up to get on with designing.

If you do decide to tackle your finances alone, then plan ahead, set up a cash flow projection and
try to maintain a cushion to fall back on if necessary.
Pay Attention to Project Management

Managing your time and staying productive can be challenging at first, but try to get into good
habits early:

 Set business hours

 Create a calm working environment
 Manage your workload carefully and keep an eye on your deadlines

There are multiple tools available to help you do this, so make sure you utilize them to their full
potential.
Don't Forget Marketing...

We all know the importance of branding, so pay close attention to your own. You have your logo
and website to contend with, but luckily, as a designer, you already have the advantage in this
area. It's not impossible to do it on a budget as there are lots of free photo resources available to
help you.

Remember that as far as marketing goes, there are tons of options to help get you started. From
blogging to business cards, partnerships to professional sponsorship, marketing (as we all
know) is a career in itself, and is essential if you want your business to succeed and grow.

... Or Customer Service

A huge part of freelancing is customer service, dealing with customers promptly and
appropriately in order to maintain a bulletproof reputation. Good customer service means taking
into consideration the needs of the customer or client and exceeding their expectations, building
relationships that ensure they'll keep coming back to you, instead of someone else.

Finally, Look After Yourself

When you employ yourself, getting the balance between your personal and work life can be
difficult, especially when you're driven to succeed. Taking on more than you can feasibly handle
can be extremely tempting, but should be avoided at all cost. It can lead to rushing projects,
shoddy workmanship and dissatisfied customers, all which could harm your ability to get work
in the future.

Take time off when you need it, and reward yourself. After all this hard work, you deserve it.
2. How to Become a More Productive Freelancer
“Productivity is being able to do things that you were never able to do before.”- Franz Kafka

On average, a working person in the US is disturbed roughly every three minutes. Unfortunately,
it takes considerably longer than that for them to get back to the task they were doing at the time.
As a result, a lot of time gets wasted and the productivity of the person suffers.

This is a major concern for freelancers in particular, as they are more likely to be distracted
because they mostly work from home. Therefore, to avoid having minor distractions affect your
output, you have to find a way to enhance your productivity.

After all, a freelancer is paid based on the volume of work completed, not the number of hours
logged. Being able to finish work within time becomes a major asset for them as it can lead to
more projects and a better reputation among clients. Even if you don‟t have any distractions
which lead you away from work, it is a good idea to make an effort to improve your productivity,
especially since it‟s going to benefit you in the long run.

Here are some tips on how to become a more productive freelancer.

Control Your „Online‟ Distractions

You won‟t be able to do much about your neighbor ringing your doorbell and coming in for a
chat or your pet wanting to cuddle with you just as you start typing. However, there is one type
of distractions you can actually control: „online‟ distractions.

Various messengers like Skype and Yahoo fall under this category. If you have signed in to any
of the messengers, it is quite possible that you will receive a Ping at any time. This can really kill
the momentum you have built up to that moment for getting the work done. So, rather than
hoping that someone worth chatting to might sign in, you should sign out before you start
work.

Get a Reliable Connection

Have you been facing issues with your internet connection? The internet is the lifeblood for most
freelancers. Whether you are writing online or building a website for a client, you will have to
use the internet. If your connection is not reliable, it could become a major problem for you.

Issues with the internet can arise at any given moment; but if you are already facing minor lags
or downtime, it is time you start looking for an alternative provider. There is no end to the list
of internet providers, so you needn‟t worry about the lack of options.

Take Regular Breaks

Most freelancers refrain from getting up from the computer simply because they feel it will
destroy the flow of their work. Some don‟t even bother to get up when they are eating, which
causes their work desks to turn into a makeshift dining table. Research and studies, such as the
one conducted by the Huffington Post, have shown that 90 minutes is the maximum amount of
time a person can work continuously on the computer (also known as the ‟90-minute work
cycle‟).

After that time period, it is imperative that you take a small break. You can plan your breaks in
advance, say for example a 10-minute break after every hour. When you take your break,
make sure you are away from the computer; checking your social media profile or e-mail on
any gadget should never be part of your break.

Use Productivity Tools

There are some great online tools and apps you can use to enhance your productivity, so why not
use them? With these, you can set up your own schedule according to the workload you have and
then follow it. Working to a set pattern helps you utilize your time effectively.

Also, some productivity tools for creating time sheets can be used for generating invoices,
therefore helping you kill two birds with one stone. Beginning any job without a proper plan in
place can lead to considerable time wastage, so make sure you avoid any such issues.

Create a Cozy Workspace

At times, it is tempting to start working in bed. You don‟t even have to change out of your
pajamas to work when you are freelancing. Obviously, that feels quite comfortable and you
might be able to get more work done. However, a better option is creating a cozy workspace in
your home.
Choose the room in which you feel you can spend the best part of the day without a
problem and decorate it so that it inspires you. From my experience, motivational posters can
really help keep you driven and creative throughout the day. Check out this discount I found on
some great motivational posters.

Then, select a corner where you are going to keep your work-related items, such as your laptop,
documents and papers. Get the lighting and temperature of the room adjusted to ensure your
comfort and productivity and you are good to go. The work environment has a huge impact on
your output, and by creating a cozy workspace you can improve that quickly and effectively.

Sleep Properly

To display your creativity and work to your optimum potential, it is important that your
mind be fresh when you start work. For that, it is crucial that you get proper sleep every night.
If you wake up tired and fatigued because you worked long the day before, there is no way you
are going to be able to keep your productivity up the next day.

Moreover, the quality of your work will suffer and it will take you a lot of time to get into a state
fit to work. So, get your eight hours of shuteye every night to enhance your productivity.

Do Light Exercises

Complementing a fresh mind, your physical health is vital for your freelancing career. Take a
hint from the Latin saying that says “Mens sana in corpore sano.”, which means 'a sound mind
in a healthy body'. If you are not in the best of shape, working long hours can be close to
impossible.

Backaches, weakness, fatigue and stress are some of the common issues you are going to face if
you are not fit enough. This is why you should try and maintain a light exercise regimen. You
don‟t have to spend three hours at the gym every day; even a quick run on the treadmill for 20
minutes is enough. Working out regularly improves your energy and stamina as well as
your mental health.

These are some of the best tips you can follow to become more productive as a freelancer. As
you can see, from the place you work avt to the number of hours you sleep, several factors affect
your productivity. So, if you have been wondering how to solve your productivity dilemma, the
tips mentioned above will surely help you.

these tips!
3. The Daily Schedule for Freelancing Success
A freelancing profession is one of the most lucrative jobs in the world. It brings you the potential
of making ten times what an hourly position would provide in the respective field. As a freelance
designer, the incentive to work hard will (in time) reach the level of addiction. But with all of the
perks that come with the job, there are also risks to be taken.
Over 70% of all freelancers never become successful
enough to do it full time. Some believe that the work
is just too risky, when really this preconception is
exactly what's holding them back.
The most accomplished freelancers in the world
understand that the key to success in their business
is maintaining a perfect balance in your daily effort.
If you follow a rigorous schedule, you too can
become a highly successful freelance designer.
The first part of every work day should be the
planning stage. This is the first 10% of your day, on
which all the later efforts will rely on. You should
make it clear as to what needs to be done that day.
The goals that you put on the day’s task list should
all be realistically accomplishable, or else you risk
becoming disappointed and thus actually lowering
your productivity. All of the tasks must also benefit
you as a freelancer. Be sure to attribute and
appropriate amount of time to each task,
respectively to plan out the day clearly; this first
step should take no more than 15 to 20 minutes.
A freelancer’s salary is based on their performance,
not their planning. So don't be a procrastinator. This
next step, the "heavy lifting" stage, is where many
freelancers fail. They tend to spend so much time
planning their strategy that they end up wasting the
majority of their day on that alone.
No matter how many more clients you are capable of
getting that day, 80% of your day should be
dedicated to projects that you already have with
current clients. Expanding yourself as a freelance
designer may be important, but completing the deal
at hand is where the main effort needs to be
directed.
After a long day’s work, it may seem like the job
should be done. This last 10% stretch called "the
expansion stage" is the icing on the cake for you as
a freelancer. And I'm sure that you are familiar with
the utmost importance of details in graphic design. It
is what will allow you to have an unlimited income
potential.
The expansion stage is the time that you can completely dedicate to yourself. Doing tasks such as
landing new clients, building your website or taking classes to improve your design skills can be
carried out during this time. This is the most valuable stage in your work day, because it offers
you the opportunity to make your potential limitless. The only downfall to the expansion stage is
that most of the time spent is non-profitable, so only pass on to it when the heavy lifting is done.

Following this three step plan will bring you the balance that all successful freelance designers
have. Ensure that your daily plan is rigorous and focused and make an effort to stick to it. Do not
monopolize by spending too much time on one particular step. Complete the work that you
already have in your hands before looking for new opportunities; but still take the time to expand
on a personal and professional level. Minding these simple yet essential pieces of advice will
surely bring you freelancing success.
I would very much like to know what you would add to this plan to improve it. And as a
freelancer, do you have a strategy that helps keep you on track?
4. The Successful Freelance Web Worker: Increase
Productivity and Reduce Stress
It's the lifestyle we all dream about: we can say goodbye to the corporate rat-race and use our
unique skills to start up a web-based business at home. We decide the hours, we decide who to
take on as clients, and we decide how to do our projects - without the fear of having to deal with
an interfering micro-managing boss.

However, as many of us already know, "living the dream" of working from home as a freelance
web designer or other type of web worker can be stressful, especially at the start. Will we get
enough clients to become profitable? Can we get all the work done by the client's deadline? What
happens if we just can't get into creative mode? What happens if we get writer's block? These are
just some of the things that can cause our blood pressure to rise and worries to deepen.

“Amateurs sit and wait for inspiration, the rest of us just get up and go to work.” - Stephen
King, on writing.
The way to reduce a lot of the stress caused by our work is to simply become more productive.
And being "more productive" doesn't mean working more hours - it means using a set amount of
time in the most efficient way possible. This way, you can get your best work done and still live
your life - giving yourself the rest and "down time" you need in order to optimize your creative
output.
Get rid of the distractions

When you're doing creative-type work, any distraction such as a knock on the door or noise from
a family member can mean you'll lose your focus and it can take a few minutes up to a few hours
to get it back. Working from home requires a lot of discipline; there will always be the
temptation to chat with room-mates, watch TV, or play games. Try to set up your workspace in a
place that's away from the television and game consoles. If you're living with other people, work
in an area of the residence where you are least likely to be disturbed.

“Concentrate all your thoughts upon the work in hand. The Sun's rays do not burn until brought
to a focus.” - Alexander Graham Bell

But this is just part of the distractions battle! To avoid time-consuming distractions, you'll also
need to avoid social media while you're working; while nobody denies it's fun looking at your
friends' holiday snapshots, you shouldn't be looking at them and chatting while you've got a
project on the go.
You might also want to download some email apps that will filter your email for you. Email
notifications are big productivity killers, and most of the time the emails are spam or are not
related to your specific work. Awayfind is a service which allows you to decide which topics and
people you get instant notifications from.

Get rid of old or slow technology

One of the most frustrating things that occurs while working as a freelance web designer or web
worker is to be in "the zone" where creativity is flying and a project is coming together, only to
find that the computer is slowing down, causing delays of a few seconds up to a few minutes.
Over the course of a day, those minutes can turn into an hour, and over a week, the amount of
time wasted waiting for the computer or program to accomplish its tasks can be equivalent to
eight hours. That is an entire day of productivity lost, and over the course of a few months, that
can result in you losing out on a serious sum of money. Buy the best technology you can afford
so you're not wasting precious time and precious cash!

Establish work hours, set your priorities and make your to-do list

While working from home gives you a lot of freedom when it comes to hours, it can become all
too easy to procrastinate, so it is essential to establish a set amount of hours per day for work -
and those hours should be times when you're least likely to experience distractions. For example,
if your home resembles a zoo from 9 AM to 2 PM, you may want to schedule your work for 3 to
9 PM.

You will also want to plan your day by setting your priorities: take a few minutes to determine
how many tasks needs to be taken care of. Then divide those tasks into the following groups:
very important and urgent, important and not so urgent, and not-so important and not-so urgent.
Once your tasks have been divided, decide how time-consuming each task will be; then based on
that, get your to-do list written up. For example, if your not-so-urgent and not-so important tasks
will only take five minutes to complete, then put them on your to-do list first. Then work on
completing your very important and urgent tasks, followed by important and not-so-urgent tasks.
Cross off each task as you complete them, and you'll notice your productivity increasing because
you won't be wasting time fiddling around with unimportant tasks.

Take breaks

Sitting down is actually pretty stressful on the body and looking at a computer screen can be very
taxing on your eyes. There is also the possibility of developing carpal tunnel syndrome. And
that's not all! If you don't take breaks every so often, the ideas tend to dry up and everything can
become a blur. You'll also lose productivity - your brain is a little bit burnt out. Get up, take a
quick walk, take a little nap, or just get away from your work for a few minutes.
You will come back feeling refreshed, your brain will feel rejuvenated and your productivity
levels will be high again.

A five minute break after every solid 25 minutes of work seems to be the magic number for most
freelance workers to maintain optimal levels of productivity and creativity; but some require
more breaks and some require fewer. It's like Pareto's 80/20 rule: work solidly for 80% of the
time with no interruptions, and then use 20% of the time to stretch, take breaks and give your
mind a rest.

A quick stress-buster

Breaks are essential to maintain your health, and are necessary to reduce productivity-killing
stress. One of the things you should do during mini-breaks is abdominal breathing. Long used as
a relaxing exercise in the yoga world, abdominal breathing works perfectly in a work setting as
well, and will get you relaxed in seconds and feeling refreshed within a few short minutes.
Simply sit up straight, close your eyes, and take slow deep breaths, taking care to expand your
abdomen outwards while inhaling. Imagine oxygen entering your lungs and your entire
abdominal area, and exhale slowly, allowing your abdomen to return to its normal position.
While this may feel strange at first, you'll get the hang of it after a couple of practice sessions
and you'll find that your mind will remain sharp for the entire day.

Take time off

One mistake new freelancers make is not taking enough time off; when you work too many days
in a row or when you bring your laptop with you to sneak in some work when you should be
getting some well-deserved rest, you won't be working efficiently. In fact, you might be
unnecessarily be spending hours to do a task that you'd be able to do in a few minutes if you had
taken the time to get refreshed.

Take one or two days off a week to do other things and let your mind rejuvenate; failing to do so
will result in you getting burnt out and churning out work that's mediocre at best and sub-
standard at worst. Don't just spin your wheels; rest, get enough sleep, and you'll find you're much
more efficient and effective.
Exercise and eat right

Scientific studies and anecdotal evidence all point to the fact that the most productive people are
those who make time to exercise.

"Mens sana in corpore sano." - famous latin proverb that means "a sound mind in a healthy
body"

So while you might think you're accomplishing more work by sitting at your desk and ignoring
your body, the truth is a half an hour of moderate to vigorous exercise per day will make your
body and mind work more effectively.

Furthermore, what you eat will directly affect your work productivity; if you eat a grilled cheese
sandwich, a donut and drink some soda at lunch-time, you'll probably feel tired and sleepy within
twenty minutes. Eat something healthy like some grilled fish and salad, or a nutrition-packed
soup because these foods are proven to keep the mind alert and the body in tip-top shape.
Final thoughts

Being a freelance web designer is hard work, but hard work doesn't necessarily mean that you'll
be successful. The trick to increasing productivity and giving clients a stellar product or service
isn't about increasing the amount of time you slog away at the computer; it's about making the
hours you set aside for work effective and efficient. Eliminating distractions and slow technology
are one part of the productivity game, and taking mini-breaks and sufficient time off from work
are the other. Don't forget to exercise, and make sure you're eating nutritious food as well.
You'll find that your increased productivity will be a real stress-buster and you'll be a
healthier, happier, more successful web worker.

What do you think? How do you increase your productivity? Does your method reduce your
stress levels?
5. How to Make Your Freelance Business Stand Out

Forget sex, passion sells! Okay, so that might need some explanation. If you are a freelancer or
small business owner, the way you make your brand stand out is to demonstrate your passion for
what it is you do. Potential customers need to be able to trust you. They need to see how devoted
you are to this brand, especially if they are going to take a chance and work with you. After all,
there are lots of other businesses they tend to have to choose from, so you need to make sure that
your smaller business stands out against the rest.

This is not always an easy task, even with more and more people pushing for buying local and
using the services of those in your local area. It still takes some careful planning and
management to ensure that you are putting the right energy out there. The signals we are sending
to users can get crossed if we are not careful in how we present them. The same goes for the
overall impression potential clients can get of our brand if we do not take the necessary steps to
put that best foot forward.

The Passion Play

There are many ways to play the game when you introduce your brand to the world. But if you
are looking to make your freelance business competitive, even in online international markets,
then one of the best ways you can play it is with the passion play. Show everyone that interacts
or engages with your brand, just how much reverence you have for the field you are operating in,
and how much passion drives you to leave a lasting mark there on it.

If you are putting out there that you only want the best for the industry, then it lets potentials
know that the work you do for them will rise to this level of expected excellence too. This is a
powerful statement to make to anyone considering your goods or services. But you might be
wondering just exactly how to demonstrate you have this passion for your business? And that's a
good question.

Walk the Walk

Bottom line, you are going to have to really put in the effort to sell this idea. You are going to
have to do more than talk the talk to prove to potential clients and more that you have passion for
your freelance business, you are going to have to walk the walk. This is not something that you
can fake if you do not actually have this passion. Your clients will pick up on it, and they will be
turned away. So if you are going to do it, you have to fully commit and do it right.

Below is a bit of a breakdown of a few steps that you can take towards this end. Hopefully it will
help put you on the passionate path towards conquering your field, and elevating the visibility of
your brand!
A Helping Hand

You need only look around the web to find examples of this element in practice. From
businesses set up to simply provide valuable information on the field to those who are actively
finding ways to share actual user feedback for a more informed user base, we see so many using
their status and place on the web to promote and elevate the field they are working in. This
helping hand approach does cast your small business in a favorable, almost charitable light. So
embrace this for your brand.

Give back through your freelance business and show the caring and giving nature of the passion
behind it. Help out and contribute to the community of information that is being shared and
discussed. Blogging is another fantastic way to offer the community a helping hand. Blogs are
known for offering valuable information and resources to the masses. And when there is
noticeable passion behind the blog, it gets a solid reputation for excellence, and is seen as
an invaluable resource in and of itself to the community it serves.
So there are a number of ways that you can assert your brand into the community as a beacon
of assistance and information, to stand out as a helping hand among the masses. Finding the
ways that work best for your brand and small business is a process, but one that is certainly
worth investing time into working out.

Work With Those in Your Field, Not Against Them

If you have a passion for the work, then you, in turn, have a passion for the field as a whole, and
you should want to see great things coming from and happening within the industry. So don't set
yourself and your brand up as a greedy motivated hater of all those you see yourself in
'competition' with. You want to work with the others in your field, not against them. This is a
good way to differentiate your brand from others who are less than cooperative with their
'competition'.

By understanding that each of us can serve and fill particular needs for clients in ways that others
cannot, we see that there is no competition among the many businesses in the field. There are
only different approaches for the clients out there to take. Each just as valid and as necessary a
part of this whole as we are.
This mentality is completely client and industry-centric as it focuses on giving them access to
as many options as they feel they need to properly consider and give their project the best
chance of success. Or to produce the best bang for their buck.

So we need to work together. Recommend and refer clients to one another, based on their
needs, not ours. This is a recipe for a much more selfless community that is all about enriching
the industry and developing the field with a cohesive and connected sense of united purpose.
This improves not only the reputation of our own business, but of the entire industry. And
visibility rises for us all.

Give Thanks

Yes, you are in business to make money from and work in a field that you love. This is not
always an opportunity that many in the workforce have, and as such, you should show your
appreciation as much as you can for being in this oft enviable position. So you need to thank
those who give you that opportunity. Offer your clients a small token or word of thanks
whenever you close a project, to let them know how much their trust in you means, and how
much you relish working in this field. They have helped you to do so.
This will further your reputation, and highlight the passion that you have for the work you are
doing. The more this impression is made on clients, the more likely they are to pass that passion
forward on to others. When they talk about their experience to their friends, colleagues, and
social media feeds they will speak with enthusiasm about the passionate ways you worked for
them. Be sure that you are also keeping track of those mentions when possible, to thank them
again.

Showing your clients that you appreciate them is key for getting repeat business, and having
them leave the situation with a positive take away that they can pass along. As you wrap up the
project or interaction, be sure that they can feel your excitement for what it is you have done or
will do for them. Offering thanks is an easy way to do so.

Keep Up

This had to be mentioned, even if it is sometimes taken as read. If you are really passionate about
your field, then you should be following along with all of the latest developments in said field
without having to be reminded. Keeping up with what is happening is key to being able to stay
on top of your game. And especially to offering your clients cutting edge results when they
come to you. So put in the extra time and work to stay ahead of the curve.

If your passion stagnates, then so will your output. Be sure that you are always moving forward,
and growing in your field, or it could spell disaster for your small business. Our passion is meant
to drive us, and our clients need to see that push, or they will go elsewhere.

Set Your Standards & Stick to 'Em

One of the things that can happen when you work in a field, is that you allow your standards to
slip, and you take steps that actually will do more harm than good for the industry. In some
cases, you may not even be aware of the fact that you are doing this. That you are putting that out
there. But it happens. Be it advertising for those who devalue the field, or cutting corners for a
client that should never be cut.
Whatever the case may be, we need to set our standards high, and stick to them if we want to
demonstrate our passion for the work we do. We never phone it in, or turn in sub-par projects full
of short cuts. We view each and every client as a chance to excel and rise to the occasion. Our
passion is supposed to help us elevate the industry and raise the bar, not drag both down to less
than stellar levels just to get things done.

If we do not have standards that we adhere to, and fall in line with, then we cannot expect
anything more from the clients that we work for. This is important to note, because just as our
clients have expectations of us. So do we of them. And if we are putting an air of excellence out
there, then we should be attracting clients looking for the same. If we are allowing our passion to
set our standards, then we will draw people with that same passion and measure of quality to us.
What's Your Path to Passion?
That wraps up the discussion from this side of things for now, but that doesn't mean that things
have to end here. In fact, we would prefer that they didn't. Especially in the interest of
exemplifying our passion for our own small businesses, so let's keep this ball rolling!
How is it that you show your clients your passion for the work that you do? Is there anything that
we mentioned here that resonates with you, or that you feel we left out?

Next week you‟re gonna get part two of this book. Let‟s just say that we‟re gonna get a little bit
more technical. I hope you‟ll enjoy this and that will help you in your career.
