Mrs.

Thompsons Kindergarten Lesson Plan

Lesson Plan Title: Multicultural Collage

Concept / Topic To Teach: Art and Social Studies Activity that teaches students about the
different cultures found in North America.

General Goal(s): Learn about cultures other than their own, create a collage for the classroom

Specific Objectives:
 After completion of task, students will be able to understand what culture is better
 I will be able to help with any questions they may have
 We will work as a class to create a collage that will hang inside our room

Required Materials:
 Glue sticks
 Scissors
 Large Construction Paper
 Magazines
 Laptops or iPads

Anticipatory Set (Lead-In): Good morning class, today we will start by talking about ourselves
and what our families like to do. There is so much diversity in the United States, but also in
North America, the continent that we live on. Starting by grabbing our iPads to look for pictures,
we will be creating a collage of the different types of people we may come across while being in
North America. You guys get to help by finding pictures online and by looking through the
magazines that I have right here up front. After that, each of you will tell the class what you have
found and which group of people you think it would belong to and what it is. After that, we will
glue everything down and hang it up somewhere around the room. Let’s get started!

Step-By-Step Procedures:
1. Have students grab iPads
2. Go onto Google
3. Help students get to images
4. Type in different subjects that they would like to research
5. Let students find pictures and print them out
6. Hand out magazines
7. Let students cut out pictures of people and artifacts that they want to share
8. Have students share
9. Help them glue the pictures down
10. Agree on a place in the classroom to hang the collage
11. Hang it

Plan For Independent Practice: Students will learn and gain an independent experience during
this project through working alone to find pictures and artifacts of other cultures and sharing
their findings with the class.
Closure (Reflect Anticipatory Set): As a class, we are going to create a multicultural collage!
This is going to be an exciting project for our room because you guys are going to find pictures
of people and different object that come from around North America. In the end, we are going to
have a wonderful collage of many different cultures and we will find a good place to hang it in
our classroom so all our friends and family can see it when they enter the room.

Assessment Based On Objectives: After the completion of this project, I will have each student
go home and share their experience with their parents. I would like my students, with the help of
their parents to come up with a paragraph about what they have learned during our lesson. I will
give participation credit afterwards. I don’t believe my students need to be quizzed on this
assignment because not all of them are at the same place with their learning.

Possible Connections To Other Subjects: This project is a mix of arts and social studies because
they will be making a collage that has to do with different cultures from around the continent.

This is a link to an existing lesson plan. The difference between my lesson plan and the one that I went
off of is that my students will be working together to come up with the collage, while in the other one,
they are all working independently throughout the lesson. My students are also a different target audience,
as in they are in a different grade based on the criteria in the original one. I went off this with the
materials and what type of lesson plan it will be. I did not use any of the same steps and had my own
creativeness within the lesson plan.
