Pair Work. Have a research on the meanings of the different
body language given below. Compare how each country
differs in the interpretation of each gesture
1. Crossing legs in the United States and Korea
Crossing one’s legs while sitting in United States is
basically just a comfortable way of sitting. It usually
denotes relaxation and ease. In Korea it is considered
rude and disrespectful to cross your legs when seated
across from a superior—whether that be a supervisor or
just someone who is older than you.
2. Blinking between the North Americans and
Taiwanese
Blinking in North America is just normal but In Taiwan,
blinking at someone is considered impolite. It also show
disgust, boredom, and disbelief. It shows that maybe
some gestures are just normal in one country but it is not
appropriate and it shows disrespect to other country.
3. Direct eye contact in America and Japan
In America, making eye contact is interpreted as showing
interest, paying attention, and a sign of self-confidence
while in Japan, making eye contact is considered rude, it
leads to uncomfortableness, and can be construed as a
sign of aggression.
4. Nodding of the head in the Philippines and Greece
Nodding or slightly lifting of the head in the Philippines
indicate yes, which means you acknowledge the
presence of the person and it is also considered as
another way of greetings same goes in Greece, nodding
there indicates yes and may also be used as a sign of
recognition and to show respect.
5. Kissing in Europe and Saudi Arabia
In Europe, male to female and female to female kissing
is a standard greetings among friends, however, male to
male kissing is less common while in Saudi Arabia, the
kiss between two men is usually seen as a mark of
respect, also kissing between two female is a form of
greeting together with hugs to show affection. But then
kisses in Saudi Arabia between opposite sex are to be
avoided.
