GRADE 8- AFRO ASIAN LITERATURE

Teaching Afro - Asian Literature is quite easy in my part since almost all of the
stories are short , and the students can relate easily because I present first the values,
culture and traditions of the country of the literary piece that we discuss.

Story : The Soul of the Great Bell ( The complete text is given as an assignment)

A. PRE- READING ACTIVITY:


A. 1 . INTRODUCTION: The Chinese Family Values and Traditions practiced
by the Chinese .( 2- 5 minutes)
A. 2. PRESENTATION : Vocabulary , Characters and Settings are presented . ( 6
minutes)

B.READING PROPER:
STRATEGY : Interactive Reading Aloud
( I present the story through power point and the students read simultaneously and
loudly- Story is in summary form ) (15-20 minutes )
1. I divide the story into scenes or events.
2. Each slides has pictures that will supplement to the understanding of the story.
3. Every after scene has prediction question in order to sustain the interest of the
students, maintain the interaction to them and follow the flow of the story.

C.POST READING :
1. Sequencing of events ( 10 minutes)
10 events from Exposition to Resolution
( Summarizing- Ronald Carter)
2. Viewing of the video clip ( Summary of the Story- 3.6 minutes)
3. Deepening Activity (10 minutes)
1. Why was it entitled the Soul of the Great Bell?
2. What other Chinese traditions involve bells? Compare and
contrast these traditions with Filipino traditions.
( Table presentation)
3. Do Filipinos and Chinese have similar values? What makes
you think so?
4. Has the story helped you understand your identity as a
Filipino and as an Asian? How? (Guided Writing- Ronald
Carter )
5. Why do you have to understand your identity as an Asian and
as a Filipino? (Guided Writing- Ronald Carter)

sections have slow learners)
