Class: S.E. (Mech) – II Div: A and B Marks: 50

Sub: Analysis of Mechanical Elements Duration : 1 ½ Hours

Instructions:

1. All Questions are Compulsory

2. Figures to the right indicate maximum marks
3. Assume suitable data wherever necessary and state them clearly.

Q1. A) Two vertical wires are suspended vertically at a distance of 500 mm apart. The upper
ends are firmly secured and lower ends support a rigid weightless horizontal bar which
carries a load W. The left wire has a diameter of 1.6 mm and is made of copper ( E =
1.3 X 105 N/ mm2) and the right wire has a diameter of 0.9 mm and is made up of steel
(E=2.1 X 105 N/ mm2). Both the wires are 4.5 m long. Find the position of the line of
action ‘W’, if due to W both wires extend by the same amount and deflection in each wire
if W is hung at the center of the bar. (8)

B) A rod of 2m long at 100 C Find the expansion of trod at 800 C. If the expansion is
prevented, find the stress in material. Take E = 1 X 105 N/ m2 and α = 0.000012/o C. (4)

C) 500kW power has to be transmitted at 100 rpm. Allowable shear stress is 75 MPa for
shaft material. Determine necessary diameter of solid circular shaft. If solid shaft is
replaced by a hollow shaft determine percentage saving in material and diameter of
hollow shaft if inside diameter is 0.8 times the outer diameter. (6)

Q. 2 A cast iron beam is of I-section consisting of top flange 80 X 20 mm, Bottom flange
160X40 mm and web 200 X 20 mm. It is simply supported on a span of 5 m. If the
tensile stress, is not to exceed 20 N/mm2. Determine the safe UDL which the beam can
carry. Find also the maximum compressive stress. (16)

Q3 Draw SFD and BMD for a beam as shown in figure. Locate the point of contraflexure if
any. (16)
