How to Enable IPMI for Server Hardware

What is IPMI?
The Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) is a standardized computer system
interface used by system administrators for out-of-band management of computer systems and
monitoring of their operation. It is a way to manage a computer that may be powered off or otherwise
unresponsive by using a network connection to the hardware rather than to an operating system or
login shell.

The development of this interface specification was led by Intel Corporation and is supported by more
than 200 computer systems vendors. Cisco, Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Intel, and NEC Corporation
announced IPMI v1.0 on September 16, 1998, v1.5 on March 1, 2001 and v2.0 on February 14, 2004.

Notes:
1. This document list steps on how to enable IPMI on 4 major server hardware vendors (IBM, Dell,
HP and Fujitsu) on selected model ONLY. You should always check vendor provided server
setup guide for detail information.
2. IPMI over LAN protocol requires unrestricted access from InfraDog Management Point to IPMI
controller on UDP port 623.
3. After IPMI get enabled with proper network connection. Download and Install latest version of InfraDog
Management Point console, Discover IPMI connection by IP address with user ID and password and
Push to mobile for management.
4. Known issue: certain IPMI controllers are not supported by InfraDog Management Point running in
Windows 2003 R2 (32bit) or Windows 7 (64bit). Please reference the compatibility chart in the
appendix.
5. Sensor information may not be available from different vendor hardware.

IBM RSA II:

1. Reboot the server.

2. Press F1 when prompted to enter the BIOS setup panel.

3. Select Advanced Setup, and update the RSA II IP address and subnet mask.

4. Save your changes to the RSA II before exiting the RSA II configuration window.

5. Exit setup.

6. After the system has finished booting, open a Web browser and point it to the IP address for the RSA II card.

Note: Scripting must be enabled on the browser to access the RSA II card.

7. Log on to the RSA II using the default user ID (USERID) and password (PASSW0RD).

Note: PASSW0RD contains a zero (0), not the letter O.

HP iLO
1. Reboot server during the POST pressing F8 when prompted.

2. Access the Network menu, disable DHCP

3. Then configure your static ip settings

4. Next, set the Administrator password or create new user.

5. Access the iLO IP by and login with user name and password

Dell DRAC
1. Reboot server during the POST pressing CTRL+E when prompted.

2. Set LAN Parameter to set static IP address

3. Set the “IPMI Over LAN” option to Enabled, set the “NIC Selection” to Shared
4. Open the browser to connect to DRAC IP address and login with user name and password

Fujitsu Server View

1. Reboot server and press [F2] while the server is booting.

2. Navigate to LAN parameter configuration menu to set IP address.

3. Access the Server View IP by Browser
