1. Purpose

Bridge expansion joints are designed to allow for continuous traffic between structures while
accommodating movement, shrinkage, and temperature variations on reinforced and prestressed
concrete, composite, and steel structures.

2. RELEVANT CODE
MORT&H SECTION 2600.

3. Name of Expansion Joint

Expansion Joint Used is STRIP SEAL Expansion Joint.

Strip Seal is a mechanical device adapted for sealing an elongated gap formed between two adjacent road
slab sections by providing a continuous support for vehicles crossing the gap while allowing the desired
temperature responsive movement of the road slab sections. A single elastomeric neoprene rubber strip is
secured to the adjacent roads sections on either side of the gap through heavy duty edge beams under a
specially designed profile.

4. Quantity to be used
Length of Expansion joint – 12.9 RM
No. of Expansion Joints – 15 joints

5. Components
Strip Seal Expansion Joint Comprises of :
a) Edge beam
b) Anchorage
c) Sealing Element

6. Material Specification
i) The steel for edge beam, centre beam, transverse support bar and other steel components
shall conform to any of the steel grade corresponding to RST 37-2 or 37-3 or 52-
3(DIN),ASTM A36 or A588

ii) The sealing element shall be made of Chloroprene Rubber.
Neoprene (also poly chloroprene or pc-rubber) is a family of synthetic rubbers that are
produced by polymerization of chloroprene. Neoprene exhibits good chemical stability
and maintains flexibility over a wide temperature range.
iii) Anchorage Steel shall conform to Grade B of IS:2062 or equivalent standard.

7. Installation Procedure

a. The gap between the steel edge membrane shall be adjusted depending on the temperature at the
time of installation of the expansion joint using the Clamp Plate Arrangement.
b. The Expansion Joint is lowered in position into the blackout.
c. The level and gradient is adjusted matching with the final finish level of deck slab at the
carriage way.
d. Necessary formwork is installed.
e. Consult of desired mix is poured into the blackout insuring proper compaction
f. The Clamp Plates are removed
g. Blackouts are cured Sufficiently
h. For Smooth riding operation we recommend installation of the Expansion Joint after the
wearing coat.

8. Fabrication

i) Steel profiles should be fixed to the tables by means of screw clamps and tacked by arc
welding.
ii) Anchor Plates shall be cut to required size by gas cutting. These shall be welded to the edge
beams.
iii) Anchor loops shall be bent to the required shape and welded to anchor plates.
iv) All steel section shall be protected against corrosion by either hot dip galvanizing with a
minimum thickness of 150micron or by epoxy coating.
v) The final assembled joints shall be clamped and transported to the work site
vi) All the surface of steel inserts and anchorage including the surfaces to be in contact with or
embedded in concrete should be sand/shot blasted to SA 2.5 and provided with a coat of
epoxy primer enriched with metallic zinc.

vii) Permissible tolerance of fabrication:
Plan Dimension - +- 5mm
Total height - +- 3mm

9. Handling & Storage

Expansion Joint material shall be handled with care. It shall be stored under cover on suitable
wooden padding to prevent damage. Any damage occurring after delivery shall be made good to the
satisfaction of the Engineer.
