RULES

We use the third conditional to talk about imaginary alternatives to the past. It is impossible that the condition will
be fulfilled because it refers to the past. We can only imagine what we could have done if things had been
different.
IF CLAUSE: Past Perfect MAIN CLAUSE: would + have+ past participle
If I hadn’t eaten so much, he wouldn’t have been sick
(=He ate a lot and therefore he was sick)
MAIN CLAUSE IF CLAUSE
I wouldn’t have drunk that cocktail if I had known it had whisky in it
(= I drank that cocktail because I didn’t know it had whisky in it)
The modal verbs MAY, MIGHT and COULD can be used instead of WOULD
In written English the inversion of subject and auxiliary can replace the usual
IF construction. It’s not very common in conversation.
