It is our own duty to serve the environment and not the opposi te. This duty should be the respon: sibility of everybody, not only of a few of us, or of the professionals. Hypocrisies and obsessions do equally harm. Each activity should respect regu- lations for environmental protec- tion. In the past this was done al most automatically because the human interventions were restri- cted. Nowadays there needs spe- Cial effort and knowledge in order that obtaining of goods is compat ble to the true common benefit. The politicians should rather exag- gerate as far as environmental pro- tection claims but the scientist's duty is to facilitate the compro: mise between material progress and environmental protection. Our Environmental Department focuses on aforementioned princi- ples. It has a large experience on engineering practice and particu: larly on relative innovation appli- cations (ex.special endogenous plants seeding, aesthetical impro: vements, landscape restorations etc). Our staff,of high quality and experience, provides services for both environmental preventive and for restoration and remedia: tion design. OTM S.A. is preparing half of the civil, architectural, and electro-mechanical_ implementaion studies, “Piraeus” station is the most emblematic station of the project since it is located in the central area of the port presenting a lot of construction difficulties. It is an underground structure next to an old ground station with remarkable architectural ele- ments, to be respected . The soil conditions are unfavorable. The structure is placed below the sea level, next to the harbor wharf. Major concerns are the water. proofing and the design against potential uplift. Three different kinds of tunnel cross sections are encountered. There is a perfectly circular cross section 12m long or the initiation of the TBM, a twin track tunnel of 12m diameter and 128m long connecting the new line with the existing one and finally atriple track tunnel with a diameter 44.7:15.5m and a length of 203m used as forestation. A book has been published on the life and scientific carrier of Dimitris Papastamatiou, an excellent Engineering Seismo- logist and Civil Engineer. OTM took the initiative for the book creation. It has then been distributed for free to friends and libraries. It is also available in digital form. The scope of this book is to honor an important and at the same time modest scientist and human being, and to allow all those who knew him as well as the new scientists to have access to his work on the specific field of seismology. Can we do something? Yes ‘we can! Many things: to withstand and to improve ourselves. We can withstand the crisis by rejecting the superfluous and by endorsing each other. We improve ourselves by pure meritocracy. Each year, OTM produces informa- tion material about its activities. This is the annual leaflet, memo- randum pages, wishes card, short works presentation attached to the year calendar, visit card etc. All these items are produced in our offices and have our own identity.
