Day 5 of our China vacation: Today we visited the Great Wall

of China. I had always been fascinated by it, especially its
size, but I didn't realize how big it really is until I saw it in
person.
It was raining when we set out from our Beijing hotel, but the
sun had come out by the time we reached Badaling, where
most tourists visit the wall. As soon as we arrived, I started
climbing the wall. Before I got near the top, I had already left
my parents far behind. They're so out of shape! There were
way too many tourists, but I tried to imagine that I was alone.
It's amazing to think that parts of the wall are over 2,000
years old.
I read this great legend about a woman named Meng Jiangnu as I was exploring a nearby museum.
Three days after they married, Meng Jiangnu's husband was sent to work on the wall. Meng Jiangnu
was devastated, and decided to make him a warm jacket so he didn't get sick while he was working.
After she finished, she took it to the wall. But when she arrived, she discovered he had died in a
building accident. The legend says that she cried and cried and the sound of her crying made 400
kilometers of the wall collapse!
What a great way to spend a day! I'll never forget it.
