Relationship between the free strain and d33 or d31?
by Henry » Sun Jul 10, 2016 4:51 am
Hello,
I am a student and my research is the shape control and optimization of thin structures with piezoelectric
patches.
After reading some publications on the use of MFCs as actuators, I found different piezoelectric properties of
MFC were used by different researchers. Some of them used free strain while others used piezoelectric constants
(d31, d33). So my question is what is exact relationship between the free strain and piezoelectric constant? Is
"free strain = (d33 or d31)/t" where 't' is the interdigitatedelectrode spacing? If so, what are the values of 't' for
P1(d33) and P2(d31) MFCs listed in http://www.smartmaterial.com/MFCproductmain.html? Because I cannot
find the exact relationship between those values of free strain and d33 or d31.
Looking forward to your reply, thank you very much!

the d33 and d31 values on our website are measured values for the P1type MFC, which operates in the d33
mode and the P2 type MFC, which operates in the d31 mode.
The values are different for low electric fields and high electric fields as listed.
Free strain is measured as parts per million per Volt applied to the MFC. The ppm is related to the actual length
of the MFC which is the first two digits after the M of the type description in mm. Yes, the electrode spacing is
approx. 500µm for the P1 and 180µm for the P2 (your t).
