GROUP: Main Group Research Topic, Subtheme Focus and Key Words for Library Research

1.Main Group Research Topic:

The main research topic for your group can be far-reaching. That is, it is not necessary for each subtheme to
overlap or tie together. The main topic statement should explain what the broad field of research is and the
types of issues/problems this research area examines/solves. Then introduce the subthemes as particular
areas of research under the larger theme.

For example, a group may study the theme of renewable energy. The main topic statement might explain
that as energy demands increase, so does the need for renewable energy options. Most current energy
needs are fueled by non-renewable resources with damaging environmental consequences. Research into
renewable energy options is examining a range of options to supplement or replace current fossil fuel
systems. The study examines current research in four areas including integrated power systems, solar
technology, wind technology, tidal energy.

2. Subtheme Research Topic Worksheet and Key Words:

The subtheme topic needs to be focused to a subject that allows you to collect five related papers to
compare and contrast for the literature review. The worksheet (mind map or flow chart) allows you to
identify specific research trajectories within the subtheme research topic. Select one as the focus of your
research.

For example, working with the tidal energy option above, the chart below identifies five trajectories that
could be examined for the project. (there could be more)

Select one trajectory as the focus of your research – e.g. tidal energy transfer and integration systems.
In the memos include a sentence or two about the particular issues this trajectory of research examines.
