Advanced Reinforced Concrete (CIVI6001 – Winter 2019)
Assignment #2

Due date: February 25th, 2019 23:55pm, submitted online in the Moodle.

Given a deep beam with:

Two concentrated load P= 2600 KN included the beam selfweight
Beam height: h = 2.7m
Beam width: b= 1.2m
Overhang a= 0.3m
Bearing plate length: 30cm, width: 1.2m

The reinforcement is proposed as follow:

Concrete cover layer: 5cm
Stirrup diamter: 16mm
Reinforcement bars diameter: M32
Concrete: f c' = 35 MPa

Steel: f y = 400 Mpa

The node and anchorage at the bearing is recommended as following:

Assuming that the strain in the steel at that location is s = 0.001

Question:

1. Propose a strut-and-tie model to the beam. Draw the model and show the geometry
2. Verify if the angle of the inclined strut and the tie is greater than 25o and smaller than 65o
according to the recommendation.
3. Verify if the angle of the inclined strut and the principal compression stress at the middle
height of the beam is within 15o as recommended in CSA A23.3-04
4. Calculate the effective cross-sectional acrea of the strut (CL. 11.4.2.2)
5. Calculate the limiting compressive stress in struts (CL. 11.4.2.3)
6. Solve the static strut-and-tie model and find the forces on each element
7. Verify the strength of tie (CL.11.4.3.1)
8. Verify the stress in node regions (CL.11.4.4.2)
