Instructions to candidates:
1. Candidates must ensure that their computer numbers are clearly written on each
answer sheet used
2. Answer all the FIVE questions. All questions carry equal marks (20%)
Question 1
Using the methods of sections, determine the forces in the following members of the truss in
figure 1, FI and JC. Indicate whether they are tension or compression.
1
Question 2
In the frame shown, members ACE and BCD are connected by a pin at C and by the link DE. For
the loading shown, determine the force in link DE and the components of the force exerted at C
on member BCD.
Question 3
The horizontal position of the 500-kg rectangular block of concrete is adjusted by the 5°
wedge under the action of the force P. If the coefficient of static friction for both wedge
surfaces is 0.30 and if the coefficient of static friction between the block and the horizontal
surface is 0.60, determine the least force P required to move the block

Question 4
Determine the clamping force on the board A if the screw is tightened with a torque of M = 8 N.
m. The square-threaded screw has a mean radius of 10 mm and a lead of 3 mm, and the
coefficient of static friction is μs = 0.35.
Question 5
The 100-mm-diameter pulley shown in Fig. a fits loosely on a 10-mm-diameter shaft for which
the coefficient of static friction is μs = 0.4. Determine the minimum tension T in the belt needed
to (a) raise the 100-kg block and (b) lower the block. Assume that no slipping occurs between the
belt and pulley and neglect the weight of the pulley.
