Lesson Idea Name: My Favorite American Symbol

Content Area: Social Studies
Grade Level(s): Kindergarten
Content Standard Addressed: SSKH2 Identify the following American symbols: a. The national and state flags
(United States and Georgia flags) b. Pledge of Allegiance c. Star Spangled Banner (identify as the national
anthem) d. The bald eagle e. The Statue of Liberty f. Lincoln Memorial (identify image and associate with
Abraham Lincoln and Presidents Day) g. Washington Monument (identify image and associate with George
Washington and Presidents Day) h. White House (identify image and associate with Presidents Day and the
current president)

Technology Standard Addressed: Digital Citizen Students recognize the rights, responsibilities and
opportunities of living, learning and working in an interconnected digital world, and they act and model in
ways that are safe, legal and ethical. Students: b. engage in positive, safe, legal and ethical behavior when
using technology, including social interactions online or when using networked devices.

Selected Technology Tool: iMovie

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):
☐ Remembering ☐ Understanding ☒ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Levels of Technology Integration:

☐ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or Choice”
during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☒ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is student-
driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and determining the
technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator.
☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student work and
promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL)

The video created using iMovie supports all learners by providing auditory and visual content. Students will
create their own video using iMovie and incorporate auditory and visual content about their favorite
American symbol. iMovie and the video I created supports and enhances student learning experience by
incorporating a couple of ways to engage in the material such as viewing it and listening to it. The iMovie
enhances learning in the classroom by providing multiple means of representation by presenting information
in still images, full motion video, animations, audio files, and narration. Within the video and assignment
students will also be able to present information in a couple of ways such as visually and auditory by
incorporating various still images, full motion videos, animations, audio files, and/or narrations to support
students with different learning abilities and styles. The activity enhances student learning by offering
students the choice of demonstrating their learning in various ways from choosing a American symbol to
choosing still images, full motion video, animations, audio files, and narrations to incorporate.

MultiMedia Tools: Video
As the standards are address students and teachers will read and listen to the standards. The students and
teachers will follow along as they watch and hear the standards incorporated into the American symbol video.
The project will be introduced through an audio file called a podcast that was created using Audacity. The
project will take approximately thirty to forty-five minutes depending on the pace of the student. Student
learning will be assessed by their willingness to be active listeners when they watch the American symbol
video and the completion of an iMovie about one of the American symbols they saw in the video.
The final project will be used to inform and differentiate learning by giving students the opportunity to
present and share the American symbol iMovie they created with their peers. I will extend student learning to
a higher level by having students analyze various American symbols in the American Symbols video and pick
their favorite American symbol to further research. Students will then have the opportunity to extend their
learning even further by using audio files, still images, narrations, and full motion videos to express their
favorite American symbol. I will conclude the lesson by asking students to go around the room and share the
video they created about their favorite American symbol. I will provide feedback through a check list. If the
student is an active listener, they will receive one check. If the student created an iMovie, they will receive
one check. At the end of the lesson, students will be told how many checks they received.

Importance of technology:
Using a multimedia authoring tool is critical to the product because tools such as iMovie offer a video
editing software where you can create, edit, and store videos. The project could not be completed without
this technology. The video component would be lost without using it which is the majority of the assignment.
Students could not create a video about their favorite American symbol without viewing a video first learning
about various American symbols or without access to a video creating software. There will be other
technology incorporated such as creativecommons.org for still images and the Free Music Archive for music.

I used ten seconds of this video to show the Pledge of Allegiance during the American Symbol iMovie.
Internet Safety and Student Privacy:
There are a few issues surrounding internet safety and student privacy that could arise while implementing
this learning experience such as student access to proper images, audio files, recordings, and full motion
videos. I would minimize risk to students and myself by providing safe copyright compliance resources for
students to gather information such as creativecommons.org for still images, Discovery Education for videos,
and Free Music Archive for music. Students names or personal information will not be provided within the
video nor will they be posting the video on social media. I will follow common Internet Safety by following the
rules and regulations of FERPA. CIPA, and COPPA.
Reflective Practice:
I believe the activities I created could impact student learning beneficially by proving a social studies
resource show casing various American symbols. The activity I created could impact student learning by
teaching them how to use video editing software, such as iMovie, to express their interest and complete their
assignment. The lesson could be further extended by asking students share and explain their American
Symbol video to their family when they get home. The lesson could also be further extend by asking the
students to create an iMovie on a topic of their choice about something they enjoyed learning in a specific
unit or over a specific time period. There are other technology tools that could further enhance this project.
For example, a podcast explaining what standards and information students will expect to see in the video
would be beneficial.
