EASING THE BURDEN OF

OBESITY, DIABETES AND

CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE
The University of Sydney

1 NCD
Non-communicable diseases are the major causes
of death, globally, contributing to around 40
million deaths a year. In particular, cardiovascular
disease, diabetes, obesity and cancers related to
physical inactivity, unhealthy diet, alcohol, and
smoking.

CARDIOVASCULAR
2 DISEASES
Cardiovascular disease refers to disease of the
circulatory system, but it takes on a specialized
meaning of a process that blocks arteries and
deprives organs of their blood supply, most
importantly, blockages of the coronary arteries
causing heart attack and blockages of the cerebral
arteries causing stroke.

3 DIABETES
it is a condition where the body is not making
enough insulin, resulting in elevated blood glucose
levels that can then result in damage to different
body parts. Current estimates are that every seven
seconds, a person dies from diabetes.

4 OBESITY AND CANCER

Research has shown us that fat cells produce many
different types of hormones and chemicals apart
from estrogen which have been linked to the cell
proliferation that underlies the development of
cancer.

5 SOLUTION
One of the transformational ways to ease the
global burden of chronic disease is to recognize
that the best medicine is actually grown by
farmers. And by that I mean, fresh nutritious food.

6 FOOD SUPPLY
Modern lifestyles have also led to changes in eating
and lifestyle behaviors. We have fewer formal
meals, we eat in front of the TV, we eat out, or take
away more food rather than cook it at home. And
at home we rely more on ready prepared
foods. These behaviors are associated with a poorer
quality of diet.
