CLASS TEST -3

BIOLOGY - CHAPTER 1 - LIFE PROCESSES

1. What is ozone and how does it affect any ecosystem?
- Ozone is a molecule formed by three atoms of oxygen. At the higher levels of
the atmosphere, it shields the surface of the earth from ultraviolet (UV)
radiation from the sun. It may affect any ecosystem in the following ways: (i)
At the surface of the earth, it is a deadly poison for all lower forms of life

2. How can you help in reducing the problem of waste disposal? Give any two
methods
- We can reduce the problem of waste disposal by these methods-

 By minimizing the use of disposable items and promoting the use of recycled
articles.
 Separating biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste before dumping them.
 Recycling the non-biodegradable waste material.

3. What is biological magnification? Will the levels of this magnification be

different at different levels of the ecosystem?
- Biological magnification is the phenomenon in which harmful chemicals enter in the
food chain and its concentration increases at each tropic level. The levels of
biological magnification is different at different levels of the ecosystem. It will be
increases with each successive level. It is maximum at highest tropic levels and
minimum at lowest tropic levels. For example, it is higest in humans and lowest in
autrophs like plants.

4. What are the problems caused by the non-biodegradable wastes that we

generate?
- Problems caused by the non-biodegradable wastes that we generate are:
 Clogging of drains.
 Soil destruction.
 Death of cattle due to ingestion of plastics.
 Ecological imbalance.
 Air pollution.
 Water pollution.
 Land pollution.
 Biological magnification of hazardous substances.
 Affects the soil fertility.
 Reduces crop yield.
