WOWING THE CROWDS:
SATISFYING YOUR CONSTITUENTS
When a magician performs a trick or illusion, the success of the
illusion depends on everyone sharing the belief that what they are
experiencing is, in fact, real. A magician wows an audience with visions of
a better world, one where floods of coins pour from a man's fingertips or
a woman floats in mid-air, and because everyone in the room wants to
believe those images are possible, everyone is happy.
The magician is pleased to have people agree with him that his version
of the world is a better one, and the audience is grateful for a chance to
believe in something bigger than themselves.
We think this is true in business, too. After all, what are
companies offering if not a better version of the world?
Whether it's computer systems or breakfast cereals,
companies invite people to imagine a world where their
product or service makes life and the world that much
more problem-free.
Traditional approaches to business only are concerned
about getting one group of people to share a belief in a
better world: customers. That's why marketing exists. But we
think there are many more people, largely ignored, who
deserve to believe in a company's vision of a better world, and they're
critical to the success of every company.
A magician must satisfy his audience to succeed. You must satisfy your
constituents.
When a company has the right people in place who have been properly
trained and their skills have been developed, and they're enjoying their
job, they're building up trust with customers who love how they're being
treated. They're going to come back and buy more because the
experience made them feel good about themselves.
That could be because the salesperson said they look good in a new
suit, or the waitress spoke to them in a personable way. Real human
interaction leaves a good impression.
You drop your car off at the dealership at 8:00 in the morning to get
something fixed. They say it'll be done at 5:00. So, you show up at 5:00
expecting to drive home, and learn only then that the part never arrived,
so it's going to be tomorrow afternoon ... maybe.
Not a good feeling.
Let's look at a different scenario. After you drop off
your car at 8:00, you get a call at 9:30. The
dealership tells you, "You know, the problem is bigger
than we thought. We won't have the part we need until
tomorrow afternoon. Because of the inconvenience,
we'll give you a loaner car for two days at no cost if
you'd like. We'll pick you up and drop you off.
A fellow human being recognizes that you're going
to have a problem and helps you. From now on, you know where you'll be
doing business because you were wowed.
When we're wowed, we go back for more of the same. When we're not
wowed, we focus on price. It doesn't cost that much to provide wow to the
customer, and the minimal investment in empowering employees to wow
customers pays off.
Notice how each discipline satisfies two constituent groups, and each
group spans two disciplines, as shown in this diagram:
Part 2: Reviewing Your Performance
It's easy enough to understand the concept of sleight of hand: just
manipulate a coin so no one sees it until you appear to catch it in midair.
Sure.
Now try doing it. You can read books, watch videos, have someone
coach you.
But until you actually put in the hundreds, if not thousands, of hours of
practice, it's just theory. Most people won't bother past the initial impulse.
But those who take the time to practice the
skills they need to master the discipline then
discover that the concepts they've learned can be
applied to other ideas in myriad ways, leading to
all kinds of new ideas and experiences.
Discipline means concentrating on the end
goal, not the steps that get you there. In magic, it
can be an illusion that wows the crowds. You can
wow the crowds in business, too, with
exponential growth.
Each one of the concepts we're presenting is a
mile deep. They take time and focus to master.
That's why we call them Disciplines. They involve
learning skills that may be new and hard to
grasp, at first. They demand simultaneous focus
on the immediate job at hand and future goals.
The 5 Disciplines enable you to think about and plan the balance you
need in your organization so that you can satisfy all of your constituents
and add the zeros that fuel exponential growth.
Most importantly, like a successful magic show, they require that all
involved believe in the value of the reality that is created when everyone
believes in the same thing and work together to make it possible.
