INFORMAL LETTER WRITING PLAN

1. Read the following instruction:

Six months ago you moved to a new house in another part of your country. Write a reply to Mark´s
letter giving news about how you are setting in to your new surroundings and what a typical day is
like. You should also say whether or not you can accept his invitation to go and stay on his farm in
the summer.
Write your letter in 140-190 words.
 Begin by referring in some way to the letter you have received from Mark
 Use some of the informal language and linkers that you have studied
 Organize your letter into logical paragraphs:
Paragraph 1: Say thank you for the letter and apologize for not writing before
Paragraph 2: Describe how you spend a typical day
Paragraph 3: Give news and say whether or not you can accept his invitation to go and stay on his
farm in the summer
Paragraph 4: Say goodbye and ask for a reply

2. Useful language for informal letters:

Beginning the letter: Thanks for your letter/ It was great/lovely to hear from you/ (The holiday)
sounds wonderful/terrible
Giving advice and making suggestions: If I were you, I would/ wouldn’t (take some board games)/
Make sure you (take a pack of cards)/ You could/should try (eating more fruit)/ It´s (not) a good
idea to (go on your own)/ It´s best (not) to (do too much)
Ending the letter: I hope that´s useful/helpful/ Let me know (what happens)/ Hope to see
you/hear from you soon
Closing phrases: All the best/ Best wishes/ Bye for now/ Lots of love
