CSR at Persistent

Persistent Systems recognizes its social obligations. In order to fulfill the Company’s Corporate
Social Responsibility, Persistent Systems has been donating to the institutions, working primarily
in the field of Health and Education since the financial year 1995-96. The Company earmarks
1% of the Consolidated Net Profit of the previous financial year for the purpose of donation in
the subsequent financial year. To institutionalize the Corporate Social Responsibility initiative of
the Company and to develop a systematic approach to administer the process of grant of
donations, the Company formed a public charitable trust “Persistent Foundation” in 2008 – 09.

Persistent Foundation is primarily involved in three key areas of Healthcare, Education and
Community Development. In the Healthcare area, the Foundation aims to establish or grant aid
to hospitals, welfare centers and establish or grant aid to institutions for physically handicapped
or mentally retarded persons. In education area, the Foundation aims to establish, support and
grant financial assistance to schools, colleges, libraries, laboratories, and other institutions for the
use or benefit of the students and run studentships and scholarships. On Community
Development front, the Foundation aims to establish, maintain or grant aid to aged homes,
orphanages for relief and help to needy and destitute people, establish and develop or grant aid to
institutions which undertake welfare and rehabilitative activities for addicts, grant medical,
monetary or other relief to assist relief measures for the relief of the needy victims, during
natural calamities. Further, the Foundation aims to establish, maintain, grant aid for the
establishment or maintenance of wells, tube wells, tanks, canals, dams, water reservoirs and
plantation of trees for the use of public in general and to undertake projects of rural
developments, village improvements in all possible manner.”
Social Responsibility
Persistent Systems has been contributing to local and regional Health and Education institutions
since 1995. The Persistent Foundation was formed in 2008 to institutionalize Corporate Social
Responsibility within Persistent and to develop a systematic approach to administer the process
of grant of donations. Persistent earmarks 2% of net profit for Persistent Foundation programs
annually.

At broad level, the Foundation’s comprises of the following:


 Designing, planning and implementing its own social projects with the help of Persistent
Systems’ employees or partners from the respective domain
 Supporting & facilitating social projects initiated and driven by Persistent Systems’
employees
 Providing monetary support to a number of social initiatives of Associate NGOs by
generating funds through cause-specific donation drives among Persistent Systems’ employees
 Capacity-building of Associate NGOs by providing them donations on annual basis
 Organizing social events for networking, social cause awareness and knowledge-sharing

Today, the Persistent Foundation works in following 9 social domains of three major focus areas
– Health, Education & Community Development in Pune, Nagpur, Hyderabad & Goa.
HEALTH
In Healthcare, the Persistent Foundation focuses on Children’s Health, Women’s Health &
Healthcare for differently-abled & elderly people. In association with like-minded NGO’s &
implementation partners the foundation undertakes various programs. Hallmark Projects in
Healthcare are:
Children’s Health: 20 point clinical health check-up and weekly doctor facility at slum &
rural schools in Pune, Nagpur and Goa
Women’s Health: Breast cancer screening program, health check-ups & health education of
urban slum women in Pune
Healthcare for Elderly & Differently Abled: Cataract operation projects across all
locations, facial cleft operation project, weekly healthcare facility for elderly care centers and
special schools in Pune.

CATARACT SURGERIES
Under this initiative Persistent Foundation has partnered with NGO’s at each location.
Services are provided to individuals from socio-economically weaker section of the society.
Every year around 1000 patients are covered under this initiative. 
Persistent Foundation has donated a mobile eye care van to Dr. Manohar Dole Medical
Foundation. This van caters to villages in a radius of 100 KM from Narayangaon, where the
eye hospital is located. Through this van awareness about early diagnosis of eye problems,
eye testing and minor procedures are also carried out. 

BREAST CANCER SCREENING


Along with Samavedana ,a CSR wing of Sahyadri Hospital and Aastha which is a collective
of women affected with breast cancer, this program is implemented in the communities of
Pune city. Initially awareness progrramme is conducted which is followed by cancer
screening. After screening report is shared with each one of them and required counselling is
provided. In case a women gets diagnosed with cancer then Samavedana tries to find support
for her further traetment also. In FY 15-16, 2756 women were screened.

FACIAL CLEFT SURGERIES AND BAL SHALYAKRIYA


Physiotherapy is a need of special children (mentally challenged, blind girls) and elderly as
there are restrictions on their movement because of their physical conditions. Physiotherapists
teach them some exercises which keeps them mobile. Physiotherapist visits once a week. 
Bal shalyakriya ia an initiative where we support surgeries of children below the age group of
18 years. These services are provided as per the need. In the year 2015-16 a team of surgeons
performed surgeries on children suffering from conjenital deformities. 130  children
successfully underwent surgeries in this camp.

SCHOOL HEALTH CHECKUP PROGRAM


This program provides services to 3000 students every year. At the beginning of the year
basic screening of all students is done against 20 parameters. Health card of each child is
prepared and the same gets tracked throughout the year by a visiting doctor in the school. A
doctor visits a school on weekly basis. Along with providing OPD services, doctor works on
five top medical problems of the school. They do conduct awareness program with parent and
students, children who need special support are identified and follow up of the treatment is
maintained.
EDUCATION

In Education, the Persistent Foundation focuses on Computer Education, Education for the poor,
and Girls’ Education. Hallmark projects in Education are:
Computer Education: Persistent Foundation E-school lab project, Cyber Champs, National
ICT quiz programs and SCRATCH training program run by Persistent employees
Education for the Poor: Student sponsorship program, School upliftment project, Mobile
Science Lab, Study centers at slums project
Girls Education: Girls scholarship program and 10th std. Reward program

SCHOOL HEALTH PROGRAM


Persistent Foundation works on preventive as well as curative aspects. In this children with
special need and elderly are also included.
Preventive:

STUDENT SPONSORSHIP PROGRAM


Uniqueness of the program is that the program is supported by employees of Persistent
Foundation. In the year 2015-16, 290 students were supported through this program across
five locations. This program includes annual support of INR 5500 per student per year. These
students are selected from the schools supported by Persistent Foundation. This amount takes
care of student’s uniform, books notebooks and some sessions on personality development,
vocational and career guidance are planned.

SCHOOL UPLIFTMENT PROGRAM


Persistent Foundation is associated with 15 schools at all five locations. This program aims at
improving infrastructure and quality of education in these schools. We work with any adopted
school for minimum 3 years.
Construction of toilet blocks, construction of class rooms, rain water harvesting systems,
providing benches and blackboards are some of the infrastructure needs addressed under this
program.
The Foundation implements various programs to improve the quality of education in its
associated schools. Some of the programs implemented in the schools in 2017-18 are:
 Teachers’ Training Program,
 Program to improve reading writing skills of students from primary section
 Life Skill Education
 WASH

KIRAN – SCHOLARSHIP AND MENTORING PROGRAMME


Persisitent Foundation has a flagship program ‘Kiran – Scholarship and mentoring program’
for girls studying Computer Scicence, IT and Bioinformatics. Every year minimum 40 new
students are taken on board. Each student undergoes through a screening process where
employees of Persistent Systems are involved. Screening is done on the basis of student’s
socio-economic condition and scholastic performance. A student is supported till she
completes her degree. Till today 102 students are supported under this program.
Employees from Persistent Systems mentor these students. Every year some special sessions
are organised for these girls where technical inputs from the experts are given.
Any girl who is persuing her studies in computer science, information tecnology and M.Sc
Bioinformatics can apply for the same.
COMMUNITY PROGRAM

In Community Development, the Persistent Foundation focuses on Village Upliftment, Water


Conservation projects and Welfare activities for differently-abled & elderly people Hallmark
projects in Community Development are:
Village & Urban upliftment: 4 village upliftment projects in Pune region and 1 in Nagpur.
Village upliftment means providing all top prioritized health, education & other developmental
facilities
Pune Cyber & Forensic Labs: Persistent Foundation has availed cyber lab & forensic lab for
Pune Police.
Water Conservation Projects: Help resolve water scarcity situations in Velhe Bhor cluster,
Hiware village in Purander Taluka, and Vegare village near Mulashi
Welfare for Elderly: 2 elderly care centers upliftment involving provision of health and other
developmental facilities and monetary support to various differently abled schools

ROOF TOP SOLAR PV SYSTEM ON NAMPALLY RAILWAY STATION, HYDERABAD


Persistent foundation has funded and Installed a Solar Plant of 227.52 kWp capacity at
Hyderabad (Nampally) Railway Station. This will cater to approx. 16% of total requirement,
which is about 40% of day time consumption of Hyderabad Railway Station.
Persistent Foundation has spent more than Rs. 1.3 Crore on this project.
The plant has started generating Electricity since March 19th 2017.
The plant was inaugurated by the Hon. Minister for Railways Mr. Suresh Prabhu on
25th March, 2017.

ROOF TOP SOLAR PV SYSTEM ON THE PUNE RAILWAY STATION


Persistent Foundation supports Pune Railway Station to generate Green Energy: Solar
Power plant generating 160 kWp daily, Annual Power Generation: 2.3 -2.4 Lakh units
Solar power plant is commissioned on June 7, 2016. Meeting almost 60% elecrticity need of
Pune Railway staion daily. The plant generates 160 kW Solar Power, 2.3 to 2.4 Lakh units
electricity per year. It is eqivalent to avoiding 185 to 195 tonnes of carbon emissions per year,
planting 32,000 Mango trees (One Mango tree reduces 6.5 to 7 kg of CO2 per year*),
Avoiding smoke emitted from 150 small cars in a year (considering one car having mileage of
17 km / litre, running for 40 kms per day*) *Source: ‘Low Carbon Lifestyles’ produced by

Pesrsistent Foundation will be maintaining this plant for 5 years and later on it will be handed
over to Railway’s
WATERSHED PROJECTS
Persistent Foundation joins hands for implementation of Jalyukt Shivar Yojana.
Considering the severity of the drought situation in Maharashtra, Persistent Foundation
decided to respond to the grim situation through engaging in watershed Projects
through ‘Jalyukt Shivar Yojana’.
The Foundation collaborated with the Government of Maharashtra in executing the watershed
projects. So far, the Foundation has carried out work in 8 locations at 3 districts benefitting
more than 15000 population and 7500 hectare land.
This has been acknowledged in the CSR Review Meeting of 'Jalyukt Shiwar Abhiyan' dated 29
April 2016.

As a response to the severe drought in   water
Marathwada, a special donation drive was
launched. In this drive, the employees of Construction of cement bund at
Persistent Systems Limited collected INR 7 village Khandeshwarwadi, tehsil
