Solution:

First determine an equation for Uber.

Uber charges = cost per mile + base fare
Y = 1.90x+2.80 -------------------- eq(1)
Second determine an equation for Lyft
Lyft Charges = cost per mile + base fare
Y = 1.05x+5.20 ----------------------eq(2)

For miles needed to be traveled so that two companies charge same amount.
Use equation 01.
Y=1.90x+2.80
Substitute equation 01 into equation 02
Y=1.05x+5.20
(1.90x+2.80)=1.05x+5.20
1.90x+2.80=1.05x+5.20
1.90x-1.05x=5.20-2.80
0.85x=2.4
X=2.4/0.85
X=2.82.
2.82 miles should be traveled for two companies to charge same amount
For Uber Put x=2.82 in equation 1
Y=1.90x+2.80
Y=1.90 (2.82)+2.80
Y= 8.16
Uber would charge 8.16 for travelling 2.82 miles
For Lyft put x=2.82 in equation 02
Y=1.05x+5.20
Y= 1.05(2.82)+5.20
Y= 8.16
Uber would charge 8.16 for travelling 2.82 miles
If 3 miles are to be travelled
Put x=3 in equation 01 for Uber
Y=1.90x+2.80
Y=1.90 (3)+2.80
Y= 8.5
Uber would charger $8.5 for 3 miles ride
Put x=3 in equation 04 for Lyft
Y=1.05x+5.20
Y= 1.05(3)+5.20
Y= 8.35
Lyft would charger $8.35 for 3 miles ride
For 3 miles ride Lyft should be chosen because it charges less than the Uber
