Course Objectives:
India is experiencing a high urban growth model and it is expected that nearly 40% of
country’s population shall reside in urban areas by the end of the decade. This course aims to
develop a holistic model for high-performance urban living based on the concept of smart
cities which is dependent on digital infrastructure. An understanding of the complexities of
cities leveraging big data urban analytics and the design of new urban systems for high-
density cities such as systems for mobility, energy, food, and living/working. Building a
knowledge base of the latest technological innovations, strategies, and policies being
developed by industry and academia that are being deployed in cities and understand the
benefit and cost tradeoffs for these solutions. Roles people will play in the design and
planning of smart cities.

Student Learning Outcomes:


Upon Completion of the course, the students will be able to:
 Define the concept of Smart Cities and apply it to solve challenges emerging from
rapid urbanization
 Understand various subcomponents of Smart Cities
 Identify and apply a systematic, strategic planning approach for developing
implementation design of Smart Cities
 Understand the role and relevance of various stakeholders for the development of
Smart Cities
 Identify forms of available public private partnerships and build partnerships as
mechanisms for mobilizing private finance

Course Contents/Syllabus:

Module I : Sub-components smart cities 20%
Detailing city assets and sub components. Who operates the components of
the city? Who controls and influences the behaviour of the organizations that
operate the components? How do city components interact with each other
and with other stakeholders? Which business models are required for
deploying Smart City solutions ? What is the role of ICT? How are cities
and initiatives measured? What is the role of government?
Module II : Digital infrastructure in smart cities 30%
Provide an overview of what are Smart Cities and what are the Energy
priorities for Cities. Refer to existing Smart Cities projects and innovative
products and services. Know current innovative products and services and be
able to discuss about their impact and benefits for the market and for society.
Identify the challenge/problem, define the real problem, brainstorm about
new solutions and learning from others, check with real users/companies,

developing/prototyping the solution, presenting/testing it and proposing it to


other stakeholders. Students write a paper on an energy transition subject,
following seminars or guest speakers etc.
Module III : Smart cities framework 30%
City indicators (Global City Indicators Facility (GCIF), Mercer Quality of
Living Survey, and Siemens Green City Index vary widely, with different
quantitative and qualitative approaches.
1. Why is a Smart City initiative good for a city? a. What is the value case
that justifies the initiative or innovation? 2. What should we do? a. Which
solutions do we deploy? b. Which actions do we take? c. Which projects and
components of the initiative are crucial? 3. How do we implement solutions?
a. Which policies and business models must we have in place. ● Customize
a Smart City blueprint ● Identify where and how to implement ICT solutions
in cities ● Develop government policy guidelines for enabling private-sector
participation in city projects ● understand city gap analysis that enables
cities to benchmark themselves, consistently and accurately ● discuss a
structured case study template for collating multiple business models for
similar Smart City initiatives
Module IV : Best practices and policy examples and stakeholder roles 20%
Best practices and policy examples that will enable cities to identify and
reuse information on stakeholder roles, policy requirements, and business
models involved in Smart City initiatives.

Pedagogy for Course Delivery:


Learning outcomes include developing students’ knowledge with respect to theoretical aspects
and industry practice. Accordingly pedagogy for course delivery includes practical learning
through study of case studies, field research and discussion with industry/academic experts.
