Safety Regulations Liquid Ballasting

General advice

· Make yourself familiar with the equipment of the machine.

· Only operate the machine if your are completely familiar with the
operating and control elements as well as the functioning of the machine.
· Use your safety equipment like helmet, safety shoes and hearing protection.
· Make yourself familiar with your working field.
· Only operate the machine for its intended purpose.

Please observe the guidelines of the machine

manufacturer and safety manual.

Before starting

· Study and understand the operating instructions before starting.

· Check the machine for any serious faults.
· Do not operate the machine with defective instruments, warning lights or control
elements.

contd.

Start

• When starting, all operating levers must be in ”neutral position”.

• Only start the machine from the driver’s seat.
• Check the indicating instruments after start to ensure that all functions are in order.
• Do not leave the machine unattended when the engine is running.
• When starting with battery connection cables, connect plus to plus and minus
to minus.
• Disconnect the earth (negative) first. Connect it last.

Warning

Exhaust fumes is dangerous. Ensure sufficient fresh air when starting in closed
rooms!

Electrical and hydraulic equipment

1. Personal safety must be observed when batteries are handled or tested.

2. A fully equipped medical kit, including eye-wash facilities, should be available
and protective clothing, including eye protection, should be worn.
3. Acid splashes in the eye should be treated immediately with plenty of clean
water and neutralized with sodium bicarbonate solution.
4. Acid splashes on clothing must be treated with an alkali, such as ammonia, if
holes are to be avoided.
5. A safety hazard exist during or after battery charging due to emission of a
highly flammable hydrogen gas. Any testing involving production of sparks, e.g.
electrical load test, must not be performed until the gas has dispersed from the
cell. A similar hazard occurs when a battery is fitted on to a vehicle immediately
after the battery has been removed from a charging plant.
6. Hydraulic equipment and tires are under high pressure.
Fluids (fuel, hydraulic oil, water) which escape under high pressure can penetrate
the skin and cause serious injury.
Therefor immediately consult a doctor if such injury occurs.
7. Notice that failure on the hydraulic or electrical system may give the roller an
unpredictable and dangerous function.

Intr oduction
Introduction Liquid Ballasting

Liquid ballasting
The traction or pulling power, which a tyre can exert, is in proportion to the weight
carried. The greater the load on the tyre, the more tractive power exerts. To secure
more traction and reduce slippage and treadwear, either cast iron ballasts can be added to
the front and/or rear end of the vehicle (or the inside of the wheels), or the tyres can be
filled with a water calcium chloride - solution to 75% of the tyre volume.

Where freezing temperatures never occur, plain water can be used, but the weight added
will be about 20% less than calcium chloride solution. Where anti-freeze protection is
needed, use the recommended mixture of commercial calcium chloride and water.

For easy reference, please consult the rollers operation manual.

Filling & Remo ving
Removing Liquid Ballasting

Procedures for filling and removing the solution

Mixing the solution:

Prepare the calcium chloride mixture by pouring the calcium chloride into the water
(never the water into calcium chloride, as considerable heat is generated in this
mixing process).

The solution should be allowed to cool to atmospheric temperature before pumping in

the tyre. The pump can be used to mix and cool this solution by circulating it through
the pump and back into the barrel with the pump running and handle at fill position.

Filling:

1. Jack up the roller.

2. Turn the tyre to bring the valve to top position.

3. Remove the valve core housing and make connection with pump.

4. Hydroinflate the tyre following pump specification.

5. Set final working pressure after the tyre has been mounted on the roller with weight
on the tyre and valve at the bottom using an air-water gauge.

Removing:

1. Jack up the roller.

2. Turn wheel to bring the valve to bottom position.

3. Remove the valve core housing and make connection with pump.

4. Completely evacuate the tyre.

5. Reinflate tyre to recommended pressure.
