Dear Students,

The following are the Resolutions regarding items discussed in the 13th Senate Meeting held on
23.06.2020:

// Extract from the Minutes //

A.3 To consider the norms for the Change of Branch in B.Tech programme (B.Tech 2019 batch) under
the current circumstances
As per the Ordinances and Regulations of B.Tech programme, the change of branch is permitted at the
end of the first year since there are common courses.
Under the present circumstances of COVID-19 pandemic and uncertainty in the dates and the format for
the conduct of end semester examinations, the new guidelines have to be framed for the change of branch.

Resolution
After due deliberations and taking into considerations of the request from students, the Senate
19/2020 RESOLVED to approve the Change of Branch considering the following 1st-semester common
courses taken by the two batches,
i) ID1101 Concepts in Engineering and Design
ii) MA1101 Calculus
iii) PH1101 Introduction to Classical Mechanics
iv) EA1103 Workshop-I
for B.Tech 2019 batch.

This is applicable only for B.Tech 2019 batch.

A.4 To consider the proposal regarding examinations and grading of courses of non-graduating
students (I, II, III year B.Tech, I year M.Tech, I year M.Sc, and MS/PhD)
The Senate in its last meeting held on 15-05-2020 revised the academic calendar due to COVID-19
pandemic for non-graduating students (I, II, III year B.Tech, I year M.Tech, I year M.Sc, and MS/PhD).
As per the revised academic calendar, the wrap-up classes would be from 13-07-2020 to 22-07-2020 and
the End Semester Examinations from 24-07-2020 to 31-07-2020. Under the current unprecedented and
uncertain circumstances, the travel restrictions, and protocols for social/physical distancing, it appears
that it will not be possible for students to return to campus by July 2020. Therefore, separate norms have
to be considered for conducting examinations and/or grading of courses under the current situation.

Resolution After due deliberations, the Senate resolved to approve the following with respect to the examinations
20/2020 and grading of the courses of non-graduating students:
For non-graduating students of B.Tech, M.Tech, and M.Sc Programme
i) The end-semester examinations of I, II, III year B.Tech, I year M.Tech, and I year M.Sc
Programmes are cancelled due to COVID 19 pandemic.
ii) For all the theory and laboratory courses, ‘Pass’ or ‘Fail’ grade will be awarded if the course
evaluation is 40% and above. If a course is evaluated less than 40%, the course instructor has
to give assignments, projects and presentations etc., and evaluate the course to bring the
weightage at least 40%. The Pass or Fail grade will be awarded accordingly.
iii) A student receiving Pass grade would be deemed to have earned the credits for the award of
the degree.
iv) The Pass grade will not be considered for calculating the GPA/CGPA. However, if a student
wishes to earn a letter grade, upon request, he/she is allowed to write the examination after
coming back to the Institute. The respective course instructor has to conduct the examination
and award the letter grade, and it would be used for calculating the GPA/CGPA.
v) A note should be indicated in the grade card stating that Pass/Fail grade has been awarded in
the Jan-June 2020 semester due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

For students of MS and PhD Programme

i) Evaluation should be done by considering the assignments, presentations, end-semester
examinations etc. Since the number of students is less in each course, the course instructor
can decide the pattern of online examination.
ii) Letter grade should be awarded after conducting the online examination.

A.5 To consider the grading of M.Tech Projects and inclusion in the calculation of GPA/CGPA
As per the Ordinances and Regulations of M.Tech programme, a letter grade will be awarded for Projects
(Phase I and II), but this is not considered for calculation of GPA/CGPA.
It is requested by the students of M.Tech programme that their grade in the project can be considered for
the calculation of GPA/CGPA.
After due deliberations, the Senate has not considered the request and advised to follow the ordinances
in which it is mentioned that a letter grade will be awarded for the project and the grade is not
considered for calculation of GPA/CGPA (R.2.4).

Any other items:

1. The Senate has discussed about the return of Research Scholars to the Institute to carry out the
experimental research work. However, after due deliberations, it was decided to constitute a Committee
at the Institute level to look into all the aspects and the guidelines from the Government considering the
situation of COVID 19 pandemic.
3. The Senate bid farewell to the outgoing B.Tech and M.Tech students and wished all the best in their
future endeavours. The Chairman, Senate has thanked all the outgoing students for their support and
cooperation during the online examinations in this current pandemic. Under the current circumstances it
may not be possible to hold the Convocation in August as planned.
