5 Gleanings from the reading of Leviticus 1-16

1. The importance of the Blood
- The importance of the blood is evident in the first 16 chapters of Leviticus. I can
imagine if I were an Israelite how bloody the Sanctuary and the services must have
been and to think that they do this on a daily basis. Here I am reminded how violent
sin is and how serious God is making atonement for our iniquities. Thankfully, the
shed blood of Jesus or true Lamb cleanses us from all sin once and forever having
obtained eternal redemption for us. (Heb. 9:12; 1 Jhn. 1:7)
2. The 7 sprinkles of the blood; 7 last words
- While reading chapter 4, I find in verses 6 and 17 that when the Priest will make
atonement for the people, he will dip His finger into the blood and sprinkle the
blood 7 on the inner curtain of the Sanctuary. In it, I was reminded that before Jesus
died on the Cross becoming our atonement, he mentioned 7 last words. Even in
Leviticus we see glimpses of the things to come.
3. Holiness before the Lord
- From chapters 1-16, the primary theme is holiness. God’s demand for holiness in His
people is based on His own holy nature. God takes His holiness very seriously, and so
should we. In connection to it is that of atonement. We are called to be the light of
the world and walk in the Light. To put away the darkness in our lives so that we
may be pleasing in His sight. A holy God cannot tolerate blatant, unashamed sin in
His people and His holiness requires Him to punish it. We dare not be flippant in our
attitudes toward sin or God’s loathing of it, nor should we make light of it in any
way.
4. A Perfect Substitute
- I thank the Lord that because of Jesus’ death on our behalf, we no longer have to
offer animal sacrifices. Just as the sacrifices have to be without blemish and perfect,
Jesus is “holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the
heavens” (Heb. 7:26) and made atonement for us once and for all having made
eternal redemption for us (Heb. 9:12)
5. Fire that burns continuously
- In Leviticus 6:13 it is mentioned that the fire in the altar must be kept burning
continuously and it must not go out. The fire represented God’s presence. The
Shekinah glory was visible in the fire at the altar of burnt offering. This ongoing
presence of God reminded the Israelites that salvation is of the Lord and the
atonement made at the burnt offering could only be made through Him. This
reminds us that we need God’s presence all the time in our lives, and that we need
Him day by day and the good news here is that God wants to dwell with us as
typified through the Sanctuary.
