Karnataka Bengaluru Coronavirus News Live Updates: Karnataka reported over 4000 cases
and 100 deaths in a single day for the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic began on
Thursday. While 4169 cases were recorded from across the state on July 16, as many as 2344 of
them were in Bengaluru.
At the same time, 70 out of the total 100 deaths linked to the pandemic on Thursday were in
Bengaluru. With 51,422 cumulative positive cases, Karnataka has the fourth-highest caseload
of novel Coronavirus infections in the country.
Meanwhile, the 100-year-old Victoria Hospital attached to the Bengaluru Medical College and
Research Institute (BMCRI) has seen a 97% death rate among Covid-19 patients put on
ventilators — far in excess of comparative numbers for countries like the UK, US, and Italy
with high coronavirus fatalities.

Bengaluru City Police Commissioner Bhaskar Rao Friday con rmed that he is under home
quarantine after his driver tested positive for Covid-19.
Taking to Twitter, he wrote, "My driver is tested Corona positive, I have home quarantined myself
for 4 days and will get myself tested again on Monday for the fth time since 3 months."
14:58 (IST) BBMP issues separate protocol for burial of Covid-19 positive, suspected patients

In a bid to facilitate the early release of dead bodies for cremation or burial, Bengaluru's local
civic body the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Friday issued separate protocol for
suspected and con rmed Covid-19 deaths.
According to the order issued by BBMP Commissioner B H Anil Kumar, all crematoriums, burial
grounds in Bengaluru city should accept dead bodies irrespective of the zone in which the
patient resided.
Further, the BBMP directed crematoriums and burial grounds in the city to function from 9 am to
8 pm everyday "till further notice."
As on Thursday, Bengaluru has reported 507 Covid-19 fatalities to date out of the total 1032 in
Karnataka.
14:14 (IST) Won’t extend lockdown, CM Yediyurappa says

Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa Friday reiterated that the lockdown announced in
different parts of the state including capital city Bengaluru will not be extended further.
In a meeting with MPs, ministers and top government o cials in Bengaluru, the CM said,
“Lockdown is not a solution to Covid-19 woes. We will not be extending the lockdown further.”
The CM had stated the same earlier this week after a meeting with the Karnataka Covid-19 task
force as well.

A day after Karnataka recorded most fresh cases and fatalities in a single day, Chief Minister B S
Yediyurappa met senior ministers, MPs and government o cials in Bengaluru to discuss revised
measures to contain the pandemic.
Deputy Chief Minister CN Ashwath Narayan, Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai, Revenue
Minister R.Ashok, Housing Minister V Somanna, Union Chemical and Fertilizer Minister
Sadananda Gowda, MP Tejasvi Surya, and Chief Secretary T M Vijayabhaskar were present
among others.
11:58 (IST) BBMP starts antigen tests in 8 zones across Bengaluru

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Friday started rapid antigen tests in eight
zones across the city.
The rapid antigen tests initiative was inaugurated by Bengaluru Mayor M Goutham Kumar at
the BBMP head o ce. According to the Mayor, the test will be conducted in the containment
zones, slums, and in the areas where more ILI and SARI cases are reported.
The BBMP has partnered with cab aggregator Ola to visit the containment zones to conduct
rapid antigen tests. According to a state health department o cial, rapid-antigen test is an easy
and cheaper method as compared to the real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test.

A 28-year-old sanitation worker attached to Bengaluru’s local civic body, the Bruhat Bengaluru
Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), succumbed to Covid-19 Thursday. The worker, identi ed by BBMP
o cials as Shilpa Prasad, was a resident of Chinnappa Garden near Benson Town and used to
work as a pourakarmika in the Vishwanath Nagenahalli area (BBMP Ward 22) in the city.
According to a relative, Shilpa had skipped work last week as she had a fever. She had taken a
Covid-19 test on Monday, the results of which returned positive two days later. “Soon after the
test results were declared on Wednesday, Shilpa and her husband Prasad (a cab driver) tried
contacting several hospitals but were unsuccessful in nding a bed,” the kin alleged.

Congress MLA P T Parameshwar Naik from Huvina Hadagali constituency in Bellary district
tested positive for Covid-19.
According to district health department o cials, Parameshwar Naik had developed symptoms a
few days back. He was subjected to Covid-19 test at a hospital in Harapanahalli. On Thursday,
his report came back positive. Naik’s house at Harapanahalli has been sealed.
Recently, MLA and tourism minister C T Ravi, Bharat Shetty MLA Mangaluru North, Ranganath
MLA of Kunigal, Sharath Bachegowda MLA of Hoskote, Rajkumar Patil Telkur MLA of Sedam,
Ajay Singh MLA of Jewargi, Prasad Abbayya MLA of Hubballi-Dharwad East and MLCs
Bhojegowda and M K Pranesh and actor-turned-politician MP of Mandya, Sumalatha

08:25 (IST) IMD predicts rain in several parts of Karnataka for the next ve days

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall across Karnataka for the
next ve days. IMD has also issued an orange and yellow alert for most districts of Karnataka,
especially along the coast and Dakshina Kannada. A warning for shermen has also been
issued in the district.
IMD Bengaluru Director C S Patil said a trough in the east Arabian Sea is intensifying the
monsoon across Karnataka. “Widespread rain will occur over north interior Karnataka, there will
be isolated heavy rainfall over Uttara Kannada and Dakshina Kannada, and coastal districts and
south interior Karnataka will experience widespread rainfall,” he added.
According to IMD, Bengaluru will continue to experience light to moderate rainfall for the next
ve days. Up to 5.30 pm Thursday, Bengaluru had received 8.4 mm rain, Kempegowda
International Airport recorded 5.8mm and HAL airport received 10 mm rainfall.
08:24 (IST) Bengaluru: 5598 containment zones in city, 21 wards record over 20 cases each

At least 21 wards in Bengaluru recorded over 20 cases each on Thursday, BBMP statistics
revealed.
According to BBMP’s Covid-19 War Room data, Shantala Nagar topped the list with 139 cases,
followed by Hemmigepura (33), Basavanagudi (32), and Agrahara Dasarahalli (26), among
others.
Meanwhile, the number of active containment zones in the city comprising 198 wards rose to
5598.
The health department also attributed 70 more deaths that took place over the last few days to
Bengaluru's death toll on Thursday. With this, 507 deaths have been reported cumulatively from
the city.

The leading government hospital in Bengaluru for treatment of Covid-19 has seen a 97% death
rate among patients put on ventilators — far in excess of comparative numbers for countries like
the UK, US and Italy with high coronavirus fatalities.
Since April, when the 100-year-old Victoria Hospital attached to the Bengaluru Medical College
and Research Institute (BMCRI) was designated the city’s rst Covid-19 hospital, it has seen 91
deaths. Of them, 89 had been put on ventilators for advanced respiratory support.

08:20 (IST) Bengaluru reports 2,344 cases with 70 new deaths

On Thursday, Bengaluru reported 2,344 cases, raising its tally to 25,288, out of which 18,828 are
active.
Bengaluru accounts for half of all fatalities in the state with 508 people dead, including a record
70 on Thursday. According to health department bulletin, a 20-year old man from Bengaluru
was among those who lost their lives.
Out of Thursday’s new cases, 1,426 were males and 918 were females. Meantime, the number of
containment zones has shot up to 7,053 from 4,616 four days ago.
08:20 (IST) Karnataka’s Covid-19 tally crosses 50,000 mark with record 4,169 new cases

With 4,169 new Covid-19 infections, Karnataka on Thursday crossed the 50,000 mark and
reported 104 deaths.The death toll crossed 1,000-mark.
The number of active cases also breached the 30,000 mark with 30,655 active cases. There have
been 19,729 discharges so far. 539 patients are in the ICU with Bengaluru alone accounting for
317 patients needing intensive care.
Dakshina Kannada reported 238 new cases. 176 in Dharwad, 144 in Vijayapura, 130 in Mysuru,
123 in Kalaburagi, 113 in Udupi and 101 in Raichur were among the worst affected.

18:29 (IST) Covid-19 Karnataka: 3693 fresh cases, 115 deaths today

As the steep growth rate of fresh cases and fatalities linked to Covid-19 continues in Karnataka,
as many as 3693 cases and 115 deaths were reported on Friday.
The recovery rate in the state has dropped further to 37.66 per cent while the fatality rate has
climbed to 2.05 per cent.
Meanwhile, 2208 more people have been infected in Bengaluru in the last 24 hours while 75
more deaths in the city that took place in the last few days have been linked to the pandemic.
The capital city now has 20,623 active cases.
18:14 (IST) Bengaluru: 160-bedded Covid Care Centre ready at HAL

The Hindustan Aeronautics Limited Friday handed over a 160-bedded Covid Care Centre facility
set up at their Old Airport Road campus to the BBMP. The facility set up at Ghatage Convention
Centre within the HAL campus is also equipped with supporting infrastructures like toilets,
bathrooms and other essential rooms.
According to HAL Chairman and Managing Director R Madhavan, the facility was created in 16
days. "Initially, the facility would be utilized for the treatment of asymptomatic COVID-19 positive
patients," Alok Verma, Director (Human Resources) said.

Further, HAL stated that it produced 300 aerosol boxes that have been handed over to various
state governments like Karnataka, Telangana, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan,
Maharashtra and Gujarat to be used in hospitals during the ongoing pandemic situation.
Further, HAL claims to have identi ed over 600 beds to be utilized as a quarantine facility at six
other locations - Lucknow, Kanpur, Korwa, Hyderabad, Nasik, and Koraput - apart from
Bengaluru.

17:42 (IST) Priority to symptomatic Covid-19 patients above 65 years for CCC admissions

The Karnataka government Friday decided to give priority to symptomatic Covid-19 patients
aged above 65 years for admissions to Covid care centres (CCCs).
In addition to this, CM Yediyurappa also directed top government o cers to take measures to
decentralize the bed allocation system to a zonal level.
“This should be closely monitored. Bed allocation and the arrival of an ambulance to the
doorstep of the infected within two hours of being tested positive should also be ensured,”
Yediyurappa added.

Former Prime Minister and Janata Dal Secular (JDS) supremo HD Deve Gowda on Friday
appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Central government to pay urgent attention
to the ood hit Assam and offer maximum aid to the state.
Expressing his concerns over the Assam oods,he said that it was "very unfortunate" that the
people of the state have to battle the ood and the COVID-19 pandemic at the same time.
"I am deeply disturbed by the reports of oods in Assam. The situation has been steadily
worsening in the last few days. It is very unfortunate that the people of Assam have to battle the
oods, and the deaths and displacement caused by it when the COVID-19 situation is raging
across the nation. They are ghting on two fronts," read a statement from the Deve Gowda.
"The people of Assam, and the people of North East in general, have blessed me and showered a
lot of affection when I was Prime Minister, and later too. They will be in my prayers," he added.
At the same time, with the State witnessing a sharp spike in COVID-19 cases, Health Minister B
Sriramulu said only God can save the state, insisting that public cooperation was key to
controlling the spread of the pandemic.
