-Syngenta is a leading science-based agtech company. Help millions of farmers around the world
to grow safe and nutritious food, while taking care of the planet. Syngenta is a global company
how crops are grown and protected. We accelerate our innovation and invest to advance a more
sustainable agriculture which is good for nature, farmers and society. Our work helps farmers to
face the challenges of today’s changing world. Farmers must adapt to the effects of climate
change, improve the soil and enhance biodiversity, and respond to society’s views on food and
agricultural technology. And we are transparent about what we’re doing and the impact it is
making.

Our seeds and traits research and development activities in field crops and vegetables enable us to
leverage even greater innovation potential, and position us to seize future market opportunities and
increase our competitiveness.
At BASF, we believe in finding the right balance for success. We believe that with our connected offer,
we can achieve this for the environment, society and agriculture alike.
p
We have a strong, global network of research sites, an outstanding research pipeline and a wide range
of products and solutions. These help farmers meet the demand for increased agricultural productivity
and better nutrition for a growing population on limited arable land. Our aim is to improve crops and
their cultivation, and to develop products and digital solutions for safe, field-specific application. From a
sustainability perspective, this enables us to help farmers use resources efficiently, optimize crop
cultivation and protection, and achieve greater and more secure yields in an increasingly challenging
environment. Reconciling the production of nutritious food with environmental and climate demands
requires a holistic approach. In the future, agriculture must be able to respect and balance the needs of
nature and society, and take an open view in evaluating all the available technologies. The work of our
research platform on gene identification focuses on the discovery and development of plant
characteristics that enable higher yields and better quality, disease resistance, and tolerance of negative
environmental factors such as drought. We apply all recognized scientific methods, including genetic
engineering and selective genome editing.
Our innovative products and services help farmers to use natural resources more efficiently and
promote biodiversity. We are involved with numerous scientific and public organizations and initiatives.
Together, we are working on solutions for sustainable agriculture that meet long-term economic,
ecological and social needs. For instance, in 2013 we established the Farm Network in Europe together
with external conservation and environmental experts to increase biodiversity across intensively farmed
land. In Germany, for example, there are currently 53 farms in the network. These show on
63,000 hectares of land how modern agriculture and biodiversity can go hand in hand.
According to Computerworld has named Monsanto Company one of its Best Places to Work in IT
for the third year in a row. Monsanto ranks No. 25 on the 2013 list of the top 100 work
environments for technology professionals. This honor truly reflects Monsanto's culture of
innovation and the opportunities we provide so all our employees are able to embrace it,"
said Melissa Harper, Monsanto's vice president of global talent acquisition/diversity. "Success
doesn't come from simply hiring the best and the brightest. It comes after you get them here
then keep them through engaged meaningful work and the continued development of their
skills."Judges compiled the list based on a comprehensive questionnaire of a company's
offerings in categories such as benefits, diversity, career development, training and retention. In
addition, Computerworld does an extensive survey of more than 27,000 IT professionals
working for U.S. headquartered companies. Editors cited that at Monsanto information
technology is fully embedded into the company's everyday business as seen in the agricultural
leader's first IT-driven product platform, Integrated Farming SystemsSM (IFS). IFS uses
proprietary algorithms to help farmers decide which seeds to plant in which sections of their
fields. Computerworld also noted the benefits Monsanto offers workers as well as the
company's diversity as key reasons for the company's high ranking on the 2013 list. Monsanto
employs thousands of information technology employees around the world and is always
looking for talented IT professionals. Computerworld is the leading source of technology news
and information for the IT industry through its online presence, its publication and conference
series. Computerworld is published by IDG Enterprise, a subsidiary of International Data Group
(IDG), the world's leading media, events and research company.
According to biochemical startup company joined forces with Imperial College London (ICL) to launch its
“biosolar leaf technology” last month. Comprised of solar panel-like structures embedded with
microscopic flora such as phytoplankton and microalgae, the technology is capable of absorbing carbon
p
dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere, generating clean electricity and producing sustainable food
additives all at the same time.
The company behind the technology is called Arborea and was founded last year by inventor, engineer
and entrepreneur Julian Melchiorri. Working in tandem with scientists from ICL, Cambridge University
and London Business School, Arborea are confident their biosolar leaf structures can do the work of 100
trees in the same space as one, all the while nurturing the environment and targeting the problem of
food security. Arborea’s innovative new products are just one example of a raft of exciting
environmental technological developments that are making a huge difference to our impact on the
planet. By harnessing the power of the natural process of photosynthesis, the panels are able to absorb
sunlight and convert it into energy, as well as nurturing microplants which sustainably create food
ingredients and sequester carbon from the atmosphere, all in one fell swoop. This pilot plant will
produce sustainable healthy food additives while purifying the air, producing oxygen and removing
carbon dioxide from the surrounding environment.” All food cultivated by Arborea is GM-free,
hormone-free and vegan-compliant, as well as requiring no artificial stimulants or herbicides. Given that
the panels utilise natural sunlight, they are infinitely scalable, making them a perfect choice to generate
electricity in a crowded urban cityscape. They are currently being trialled at ICL’s West London White
City campus and if all goes to plan, they could provide a valuable demonstration of how sustainable
solutions can have multi-faceted real-world applications. The first of their kind, the panels do somewhat
recall the CityTrees that have proven successful in cities across Europe, albeit with the added
advantages of energy generation and food production. The project builds upon Melchiorri’s previous
success with ‘Exhale’, which is the world’s first ever living chandelier. Using the same technology as the
biosolar leaf panels, the chandelier contains microplants which convert carbon into oxygen, thus
removing CO2 from the air. It currently is on permanent exhibition at London’s V&A museum. However,
the biosolar leaf project takes things one step further as the panels can not only generate electricity, but
produce edible ingredients as well. As such, Londoners can hope to see the panels adorning walls,
rooftops and myriad other surfaces around the city in the not-too-distant future.
According to the Semios platform allows pest management on your ranch in real-time.
SemiosNET is a pest management system for farming that is devoid of neurotoxins. Camera-
equipped traps that monitor pest activity are placed throughout a field or orchard, approximately
one for every hectare. A central hub then delivers this information, as well as weather data, to
SemiosNET software that both records the data and manages the devices. Growers and their
consultants then monitor their crops in real time and isolate insect pressure on a precise area,
then use remotely controlled dispensers (approximately two per hectare) to spray pheromones;
these manipulate the insects’ communication pathways, confusing them so that males can’t find
females and the bugs can’t reproduce. In addition to being non-toxic, the pheromone treatments
actually cost less than traditional pesticides. Semios is based in Vancouver, BC Canada and
currently offers service coverage throughout Canada, the United States, and Europe.
Species specific insect activity data combined with time, geolocation and
environmental data are an input to digital farming solutions. Our aim is to
offer data integration between in-field sensors and farming software
platforms.
