Criteria Marks

• Demonstrates a developed aural understanding

• Describes in some detail the use of phrasing and texture in this excerpt 4-5
• Demonstrates a competent aural understanding

• Describes some of the uses of phrasing and texture in this excerpt 2-3
• Demonstrates a basic aural understanding

• Demonstrates a limited aural understanding 1

Strengthens:
You did well in distinguishing that excerpt has a repeated phrase in the percussion and in the
vocal part. Good job identifying that the texture gradually increases and that the vocals are
pertinent in building the texture. You demonstrated that there is a strong link between
phrasing and texture as the texture increases every time the melody is repeated.

Comments:
Be careful when using lyrics to distinguish when a phrase ends. The word “Mamma” does
not indicate the end of the melodic phrase every time as the word appears multiple times
during the melodic phrase. Your answer would be improved if you added detail descriptions
of the type of voices (female, male, alto, soprano, etc.) used in the excerpt and their role in
relation to each other. For example, the second voice that enters sing in unison with the first
and some of the voice sing a counter-melody later in the piece. You attempted to identify the
length of the melody phrase; however, the phrase was four bars long not six. I encourage you
to continually attempt to identify the length of phrases, as you will better your aural skills
which are important for all aspects of music.

excerpts

contrasted in these excerpts
• Demonstrates a basic aural understanding

• Demonstrates a limited aural understanding 1

Strengths:
You did a good job of highlighting a few points of difference between the two excerpts. You
demonstrated a good understanding of how phrasing was used in the second excerpt.
Excellent understanding of how the two pieces work together to create a whole piece and
how the second excerpt changes musical elements to differ from the first section of the piece
(the first excerpt). Overall good descriptions of the second excerpt.

Comments:
Your answer needs to provide more detailed descriptions to support your observations. For
example, list the rhythmic instruments that were added in the second excerpt or provide a
description of the tone colour that the instruments have (if you do not know the name of the
instrument). This would have illustrated how the accompaniment provided a different feel
than the first excerpt. Your answer should also make a connection between the descriptions
of the second excerpt to descriptions of the first excerpt to demonstrate the contrast between

the sections. For example, instead of only stating, “the second excerpt emphasises the soloist
more than the first”, you need to provide some detail about why the soloist was focal in the
first excerpt; was there no soloist, was there two soloists?

Part A: Score: 5/6 Rank: 1st

Criteria Marks

excerpt
• Demonstrates a competent aural understanding

• Describes some of the uses of phrasing and texture in this excerpt 2-3
• Demonstrates a basic aural understanding

• Demonstrates a limited aural understanding 1

Strengths:
Great job on providing an in depth on phrasing throughout the excerpt. Your answer
demonstrated great terminology and aural skills in regard to identifying phrases and their
characteristics. Your analysis of phrasing was good and demonstrate some links to its effect
on texture. Overall you provide a great understanding about phrasing and were able to
identify some textural features.

Comments:
The excerpt had quite a number of textural techniques (voices in unison, countermelody,
staggered entry of instruments). You need to work on identifying more textural techniques to
strengthen your answer. You did a good job with your phrasing analysis; however, the main
melody is one phrase not two (hint: consider when the sing is breathing, is there a long
enough breath between lyrics for it to be considered a different phrase).

Strengths:
Great description techniques used by the soloist in the second excerpt. Your answer did a
good job of highlighting key difference between the excerpts. You demonstrated an
understanding of continuity between the excerpts and how their differences work together to
create a whole piece.

Comments:
Comparisons between excerpts need to be explicit and demonstrate an understanding of the
musical events happening in each piece to discern how the excerpts are contrasting. For
example, when stating that the second excerpt explored more expressive and dynamic
techniques then the first excerpt, you need to state what techniques were used in the first
excerpt to support your claim. You also need to state what specific instruments are utilising a
particular concept or technique (eg. a female alto vocalist is improvising over the melody
from excerpt one) otherwise a wrong assumption can be made about what instrument you are
discussing.

Student Ten:

Overall Rank: 10th

Part A: Score: 1/6 Rank: 10th

Criteria Marks

• Describes in detail the use of phrasing and texture in this excerpt 6

• Demonstrates a developed aural understanding

• Describes in some detail the use of phrasing and texture in this excerpt 4-5
• Demonstrates a competent aural understanding

• Describes some of the uses of phrasing and texture in this excerpt 2-3
• Demonstrates a basic aural understanding

• Demonstrates a limited aural understanding 1

Strengths:
Your answer outlined the instruments in the excerpt and listed the types of vocals there were
which alludes to the texture that might form throughout the excerpt. You clearly identified
that the vocals formed a harmony to create texture. You attempted to identify the main
melody phrase.

Comments:
Your answer did not provide enough detail to demonstrate a sufficient understanding of how
texture and phrasing were used in the excerpt. You need to think about the different textures
within a piece (best practice is to compare each section of the song to the section before it
and identify how it is different). Your answer needs to also focus on describing the phrases
each instrument is playing, you may consider asking yourself the following questions; are the
phrases long or short, does the phrase have a distinct characteristic, how long is the phrase.
Your answer did attempt to identify the length of main melody; however, you need to be
exact with the answer and think about where the natural gap is between notes to figure out the
phrasing.

excerpts

• Demonstrates a basic understanding of how the musical concepts are 2-3

contrasted in these excerpts
• Demonstrates a basic aural understanding

• Demonstrates a limited aural understanding 1

Strengths:
You can clearly identify the instruments in the second excerpt. Good job recognising some
textural features such as the harmony, texture frequency and the layers of instruments: lead
singer, backing vocals and rhythm. Good to see you attempt identifying the phrasing.

Improvements:
It is essential that you compare both excerpts and highlight points of difference between the
two as this is what the question asks from you. Your answer needed to provide a more in-
depth analysis of how the concepts are used in the piece (eg. Instead of saying: “female alto
main part singing extended version of soprano sang”. You should state what the female alto
is specific singing: “Female alto soloist is improvising over the main melody sang which was
sang by a female soprano in the first excerpt”.) Unfortunately, your statements about phrasing
were incorrect, you should try to figure out the time signature first before moving onto the
phrasing of riffs or rhythmic patterns.
