“Lauka ko tarkari ma ta khadina ” We might be very skeptical about the idea of this typical

Nepali vegetable which is why I am here to introduce to you this typical Nepali plant called
LAUKA also known as BOTTLE GOURD in English outlining some fascinating facts and uses
about this plant.
Generally, Bottle gourd is harvested young to be consumed as a vegetable as described above
but it is also left to get matured and is used as a container and even as a musical instrument.
Also this plant seems to bear many medicinal values as well as it has been a part of many
mythologies of Hindus and Buddhists. In diverse range of communities throughout Nepal from
east to far west this particular plant holds significance in many cultural ceremonies.
In Humla, it has its own value and carries lots of interesting stories. In Nyin valley, where I born,
it is used as a ceremonial beer container for worship, marriage ceremonies, welcome, and
farewell parties. The chayang (home brewed beer) in the Gourd container is believed to be
blessed by the goddess of longevity and is respected as a symbol of good omens.
Unfortunately, as we march ahead with all the modern and technological advancements, the
usage of Bottle Gourd is disappearing slowing. Preferences are driven by convenience and
hence the change but the practise of using Bottle Gourd is slowly disappearing and so do our
culture and tradition.
