Globe: 
A globe is a simple and accurate model of the Earth. It shows the distribution of land and water on
the surface of the Earth.

Advantages of the Globe:


● Shows the correct size, shape and location of continents and oceans
● It is the exact model of the Earth

Disadvantages:
●  Difficult to carry
● Small and all the details of the place cannot be shown on it
● Only one half of the Earth can be seen at a time on a globe

Maps:
A map is a representation of the Earth’s surface or a part of it on a flat surface.
The word ‘map’ comes from the Latin word mappo, which means a napkin.

Atlas:
A book of maps is called an atlas.
Gerardus Mercator, a Flemish mapmaker, was the first to publish a collection of maps in the form of a
book.

Scale:
The ratio between the distance on the ground and the distance on the map is known as the scale of
the map.

Colours: Colours are used to show the features of the map


Symbols: Symbols represent something in the real world. They are used in place of words to give
information
Key: Key helps us understand the colour scheme and the symbols used.
