Characters:

Rebecca: The first wife of Maxim. She was very mean but presented herself as a nice person to Maxim.

Maxim de winter: Widower and owner of Manderley. He killed Rebecca.

The first person: The second wife of Maxim. She has no name.

Mrs. Van Hopper: Employer of the I-person.

Mrs. Danvers: Personal friend of Rebecca, housekeeper of Manderley. She hates the I-person.

Caroline de Winter: She was in the portrait. The I-person had the dress made after the Caroline wore, to
impress the ball.

Colonel Julyan: The man who leads the investigation into Rebecca's death.

Beatrice: The sister of Maxim de Winter, who often comes to visit and always tells her opinion about
others.

Dr. Baker: A doctor from London who discovered that Rebecca was seriously ill and no longer had a long
life and couldn't have children.

Frank Crawley: A friend and agent.

Jack Favell: Rebecca's cousin he wanted to marry and a good friend of Mrs. Danvers.

James Tabb: The boat maker who had made Rebecca's boat at the time and discovered that there were
strange holes in the boat.
Summary

Chapter 1

Manderley is a large country house. The garden is full of weeds. Manderley was a house that created
fear for those who dreamed about it. Rebecca is the first wife of Max de Winter. Max de Winter is the
owner of Manderley and never got over the death of his first wife. Max and Mrs. van Hopper would
have lunch but Mrs. van Hopper was sick. The companion girl did have lunch, but she was very clumsy
and knocked over a vase. Max then offered to come and have lunch at his table. The girl got into a
relationship with Max and not much later she got married.

Chapter 2

After they get married they go to live in Manderley. The housekeeper is very strict the house had
different wings and they had to be maintained so comb that there were as many as twenty employees.

Chapter 3

The first person meets the sister of Max (im) Beatrice and she comes to judge the first person. She
approves of her but she tells him she is different.

Maxim comes home from work, he goes for a walk with his wife and Jasper the dog. Jasper is annoying
and walks to the other bay. Maxim forbids his wife to go after Jasper but she does it anyway. In the
other bay she meets an absent man, Ben, who immediately says that She will not return. The I-person
does not understand what he is talking about. Ben digs and searches for shellfish. The first person asks
him for a piece of rope to take Jasper back. When she came back, Maxim was angry and forbade her
from ever going back to that bay.

Chapter 4

The first person meets agent Frank Crawley. She starts talking to him and she starts asking about
Rebbeca. He doesn't really want to talk about it, but he finally answers her questions.

Chapter 5

Maxim had to go to London for a business dinner. After lunch, the first person went with Jasper to the
boathouse. Ben is scared, Rebecca was angry with him and threatened that if he looked again, he would
have to go to jail. She had gone home again and was in the tea room when she heard footsteps it was
Jack Favell a good friend of Mrs. Danvers. He wanted the I person to come with him to his car to show it,
but she did not trust him. Jack explicitly asked the I-person if she didn't want to tell her husband that he
had come by. Mrs. Danvers is going for a detour with Jack. The first person uses it and goes to Rebecca's
room. It was in the room as if someone was still sleeping, the bed neatly made, things on the dressing
table. Suddenly Mrs. Danvers behind her, she was angry but friendly at the same time. She asked why
she had never asked to see the room before.

Chapter 6

The next day Beatrice came to visit early. The first person asked her if she knew Jack. She said he was
Rebbeca's cousin. When she was back at Manderley, she heard voices coming from the library that
forbade Jack from ever coming to Manderley.

Chapter 7

A ball will be held at Manderley. Mrs. Danvers had brought the I-person to the idea of putting on a dress
as in one of the paintings. No sooner said than done. On the day of the ball, the I person comes down
with a white dress. Maxim became very angry and the I-person did not know why. He shouted that she
should change into another dress. Weeping person went back to her room. Not much later, Beatrice
came to explain why Maxim had become so angry. Rebbeca had looked exactly the same on the
previous ball.

In a violent storm a ship sails on the rocks. When the ship is salvaged, they notice that a boat is
underneath. In the boat a corpse is found that turns out to be Rebbeca. Maxim tells the I-person how
Rebecca died. She was described as a beautiful woman to be seen with, but she was cruel on the inside.
Maxim shot her and then put her in a boat and let it sink. This only improves the relationship between
the I-person and Maxim. The first person decides to help Maxim and says nothing.

Chapter 8 + 9

Maxim has to go to the police station with the I-person, where all the facts about Rebecca's death were
told. The I-person faints and Frank Crawely brings her home. She is visited by Jack Favell. He had a note
saying she wanted to talk to him. The woman buried at the church is not Rebecca. Mr. Tabb said that the
holes must be made in the boat. Maxim comes home and meets Jack, he gets angry but Jack ignores him
and shows the note. Maxim calls Colonel Julyan, who is coming. A witness is called; Ben but he says
nothing that he is afraid that he should go to jail.

Chapter 10

Mrs. and Mr. de Winter go with Jack and Colonel Julyan to London to Dr. Baker. There they found out
that Rebecca was there under the name Mrs. Danvers. When they leave they eat something in a
roadside restaurant. They would also sleep there, but Maxim felt that something was wrong with
Manderley. He had telephoned Frank just before, and he said that Mrs. Danvers had left. They leave
home and when they are almost there they see a red sky in the distance. Maxim does not trust it and
will drive faster. The I-person that was the sun that came up, but it was three o'clock in the morning.
When they are at the top of the hill, they see Manderley on fire in the distance.
