To kill a Mockingbird

Harper Lee
Chapter 1: The book is narrated by a young girl named Jean Louise Finch. Her name is also
known as scout. She lives with her father whose name is Atticus and her brother named Jem. She
is also accompanied by their maid named Calpurnia who is an old black woman. Unfortunately,
their mother died when Scout was two, Jem(her brother) was 6.
Chapter 2: A character named Dill who is friends with Scout and Jem leaves back to his
hometown, the town of Meridian. He visits Maycomb in the summers. Around this time Scout was
eager to finally attend school for the first time. It wasn't what she expected. She doesn't see eye to
eye with the teacher, this affects her school life a lot.
Chapter 3: Scout finds herself in some trouble. She rubs Walter’s nose in the dirt for getting her
in trouble. When Jem sees this he then interferes then invites Walter to eat at their home. How he
lives aren't the best conditions, so when Scout criticizes how he was eating, Calpurnia was upset
and hit her. She then tells her to act right.
Chapter 4: On the way back from school, Scout passes by the Radley house and sees tinfoil
sticking out of a knot hold. This tree belongs to the Radley's. Scout reaches into the knothole and
discovers two pieces of chewing gum. She chews it and tells Jem about her discovery. He gets
scared and instantly tells her to spit it out. Ever since then, they started to find more and more
things in that location, they started to question where it is coming from.
Chapter 5: Jem and Dill grew closer, and Scout begins to feel left out of their friendship. She
most certainly doesn't enjoy it. Meanwhile, she begins getting closer with one of the neighbors
whose name is Miss Maudie Atkinson. She is a widow with a talent for gardening and cake baking
who was a childhood friend of Atticus’s brother, Jack. Miss Maudie personally believes Boo is
alive, now Scout is starting to think he is too.
Chapter 6: On the last day of summer, all three kids do something that they probably regret. They
go to the Radley's house hoping to get into contact with Boo Radley. Suddenly, they see the
shadow of a man with a hat on and flee, hearing a shotgun go off behind them. They escape under
the fence by the schoolyard, but Jem’s pants get caught on the fence. He had to kick them off in
order to get out of the situation he was in. Later, he went back to get them. Scout waited for his
arrival anxiously.
Chapter 7:
A few days after the incident, Jem told Scout when he went to get his pants that they were,
mysteriously mended and hung neatly over the fence. Lastly, they began to find much more
things in the knothole. Days later they see that it has been filled with cement. Mr.Radley had filled
it with cement supposedly it was dying and that's how you would prevent it from further dying.
Chapter 8:
In this chapter, the town is witnessing snow for the first time in years. This was something that
they were certainly not used to. School was closed for them as well. That day Jem and Scout
wanted to make a snowman since they haven't before. They quickly gathered at Miss Maudie's
house and grabbed as much snow as they could. They made it out of dirt and snow. Their
snowman looked too similar to one of their neighbors that Atticus told them to disguise it. He
thought Mr.Avery might take it to an offense.
Chapter 9: At school, Scout nearly starts a fight with a classmate named Cecil Jacobs after Cecil
declares that “Scout Finch’s daddy defends niggers.” Surprisingly, she walked away from it. She
didn't want to upset her father when he specifically told her to avoid getting into conflict with him.
Atticus had been asked to defend Tom Robinson, a black man accused of raping a white woman.
This time around it's Christmas time and Jack (Atticus's brother) is staying with them. Jack
confronts Scout about her inappropriate language that she began to pick up.
Chapter 10: Compared to other fathers, Atticus is the oldest out of all them. The kids are quite
embarrassed about this. His age limits him from doing a lot of things like playing catch with Jem.
Later on in the chapter a "Mad dog" appears in town. Atticus was told by a higher authority of
their town to shoot him. Jem and Scout then start to question Atticus's past. They find out that
their father was known as "One Shot Finch." He had a killer shot and their children barely found
out about it. Scout was so thrilled when she found out about this she wanted to tell the whole
school but Jem advised her not to.
Chapter 11: Mrs. Dubose was known as the obnoxious lady in town, she was old and going
crazy. Atticus informed Jem and Scout that she was a previous morphine addict. One day, the
children walked by her house and she was out on the porch. She then started to bash the
children. Jem couldn't take it, he then trashed her house by ruining her plants with his sister's
baton. His consequences were, for about a month, to read to Mrs.Dubose. Right after their time
was up, she passed away.
Chapter 12: Jem has reached the age of twelve, at this time he starts to act differently. He's
starting to hit puberty. Since he's becoming older, he's been moodier than usual and more distant
towards scouts. Calpurnia refers to him as Mister Jem now. Scout starts to look forward to seeing
dill but unfortunately he didn't come to visit that summer. He sends a letter saying he has a new
father. His mother had remarried.
Chapter 13,14,15,16:
Scout and Jem's father has a sister who's name is Aunt Alexandra. She told them she will be
staying at their residence for a while to provide a “feminine influence.”
Dill runs away from home and surprises Scout and Jem when they find him under Scout's bed.
The loneliness he felt at home drove him to leave.
After about a week Dill arrived, a group of people and a sheriff named Heck Tate approached
Atticus's house. They explained that Tom Robinson had been moved to their county's jail and that
they fear a lynch mob will be happening.
Tom Robinson's first day of trial is happening. People from the town and even outside of town are
attending, white and black folks. Miss maudie didn't want to attend, she felt as if it wasn't right to
watch someone on trial for his life.
Chapter 17,18,19,20:
In this chapter, the prosecutor and defendant question Heck Tate and Mr. Bob Ewell. According to
Heck Tate, Bob called and told him that his daughter Mayella had been raped.
Mayella who testifies in the next chapter states she invited Tom Robinson inside her home to do
work for her, where she was then taken advantage of by him.
The chapter after explained that Tom testified. Tom was the only witness Atticus had. He
explained that he was helping her with something and he climbed on a chair. Mayella grabbed his
legs, he became very scared and fell back down. He then mentioned she was throwing herself on
him. She had asked him to kiss her. At this point, the father had witnessed this interaction and
nonetheless, assumed the worse. Being frightened, Tom Robinson fled.
Scout and Dill learned something about someone named Mr.Dolphus Raymond. He isn't what he
seems to be like. Mr. Dolphus Raymond reveals that he is drinking from a paper sack but Dill
realized the drink isn’t alcoholic. He does this to give people a reason why he lives the way he
does. He prefers being with blacks than whites. His children are what they referred to as "mixed
kids."
Chapter 21,22,23,24:
While Atticus was at trial, Calpurnia hands Atticus a note. The note stated that the kids have been
missing since the afternoon. Mr. Underwood then interrupts and says that Jem and Scout were on
the balcony and that they have been there since just after one in the afternoon. Atticus demands
that they go home and have supper. They hesitated. They wanted to hear the verdict.
In chapter 22, Jem cries. He didn't approve of the final verdict. The next day, the black community
of Maycomb had sent huge amounts of food to the Finch household. Jem's perception of his town
had changed after the trial. He used to think the townspeople were the best in the world. Now, he
doesn't think of it like that anymore, it could be the maturity that's starting to grow in him. The
Flinch family were very worried about Atticus well-being. They think Bob Ewell behavior is only
going to progress. On the other hand, Atticus is not at all worried. He already assumed this would
happen since he had made a fool of him. Atticus believes he just needed to take his anger on him
in that moment and Bob should no longer be a threat.
One day in August, Atticus had broke news to Aunt Alexandra and Scout. He had told them that
Tom Robinson had been killed trying to escape in the place he was being held in. They were in
shock. Atticus instructed Calpurnia to come with him and tell Tom's wife about the news.
Chapter 25,26,27,28:
When Atticus went to tell Helen Robinson the news, they found Jem and Dill. They went inside
the car and soon after went to Mrs.Robinson's house. They overheard them talk and they saw her
collapse even before Atticus could tell her that Tom had died. The town had a lot of opinions on
his death which was so unfortunate.
Miss Gates, who is Scout's third grade teacher, teaches the class about the issue with Hitler's
persecution of the Jews and what democracy meant. Scout, who was surprised by her concern
with Hitler and his immoral actions, asks Jem a question. She asked how Miss Gates can preach
about equality even though she talked bad about Tom Robinson's case. Jem who was furious told
her to never talk to him about that again.
Bob Ewell continues to be filled with anger. He takes it out on the townspeople who are connected
to the case. In the month of October, Judge Taylor was home alone and heard someone and later
found his screen door open. Bob Ewell then begins to follow Helen Robinson to work. Although
he's keeping his distance he was still saying things to her. Deas who lives in the town sees Ewell
and threatens to have him arrested if he doesn’t leave Helen alone. After that incident, nothing
else had happened to her.
Scout has a pageant which she was a part of. Her brother Jem escorted her to the pageant. It was
very dark which frightened the children. When they arrived all of the children went backstage.
Scout ended up falling asleep which resulted in her missing her entrance. She ran onstage at the
end, the audience thought it was funny and laughed. The woman who was in charge made it
known that Scout ruined it. Scout was ashamed, so ashamed she and Jem waited for everyone to
leave so that they could.
Chapter 29, 30, 31:
cout and Jem get into an altercation with Bob Ewell. Scout was just about to talk about what
S
happened but was interrupted by Heck Tate. He pointed out on her costume that a knife had been
stopped by a wire. She finally met Boo Radley. He was who had saved her and Jem. She looked at
him. He was pale, had a pinched face and eyes that were dull.
Bob Ewell was dead. He fell on a knife. Atticus thinks his son killed him out of self-defense. Heck
Tate confidently the death was an accident. Atticus insists to not protect his son. But Heck
corrects him and says Ewell fell on his knife. Although he knows that Boo is the one who stabbed
Ewell.
At the end Scout found out that Atticus had been right. One time he said you never really know a
man until you stand in his shoes and walk around in them. She never realized the life Radley had
live until the moment she was standing on his porch. He goes inside his house and she never
sees him again.
