Ulcerative Colitis

Ulcerative colitis is a disease of the digestive tract, and is a widespread problem, commonly
affecting, but is not limited to the age group of 15 to 40 years.

What is Ulcerative Colitis?

Ulcerative colitis is an autoimmune disease of the intestine, causing inflammation of the large
intestine and associated problems. In contrast to other autoimmune diseases of the digestive
system like Crohn’s disease, Ulcerative colitis causes ulceration in the colon and rectum.
Swelling may also be present in the colon and rectum.

Types of Ulcerative Colitis

Based on the area affected Ulcerative colitis can be of following types:

1. When the entire colon is affected, it’s called Pan-colitis.
2. When the rectum is involved, this is called Proctitis.
3. When the sigmoid colon is affected, the condition is termed Sigmoiditis.
4. When the areas beyond sigmoid colon are affected, it’s called Left-sided colitis.

Pathology

In Ulcerative colitis, the cells of the inner cell-lining of the intestine, called the mucosa, die,
resulting in ulceration of the lining. The inflammation further results in frequent bowel
movements/diarrhea, often accompanied by blood and pus in the stools.

Causes of Ulcerative Colitis

There are a variety of reasons responsible for the problem, including genetics, environmental
factors, and autoimmunity. These causes may be extrinsic or intrinsic.
Extrinsic factors

1. Unhealthy diet.

2. E. Coli, and other infections.

3. Anti-inflammatory medicines, and the medicines used for the treatment of acne, like
isotretinoin.

Intrinsic factors

1. Disturbance of the immune system- allergic or autoimmunity, in which the body’s

immune system starts attacking its own cells.

2. Genetics

3. Hereditary factors as the presence of the same diseases in family members may indicate
the person is at increased risk of developing ulcerative colitis.

4. Psychosomatic factors like stress can trigger the onset of the disease.

Symptoms of Ulcerative Colitis

Symptoms of Ulcerative colitis may come and go known as flare-up and remission phases.

Diagnosis :

1. Verbal Confirmation of the symptoms from the patient by the doctor.

2. An X-ray using barium enema provides a picture of the inflamed cell lining in the intestine.

3. Endoscopic observation of the inside of the intestine may provide the doctors, with a better
picture and the extent of inflammation of the intestine.

Patients with long term Ulcerative colitis, more than 10 years or so, can be at the increased risk
