MAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF IVI FANS

ALU SERIES 20

BLADE
The blade is composed by an aluminum extruded profile (6060 T5 UNI 573-3), internally reinforced by
a steel shank (C40 UNI 7845) bolted to the profile. The shank is also used to connect the blade to the
hub.
The profile chord is 200 mm, constant along the blade span. The blade is untwisted, and incorporates a
flap to optimize the performance on the blade inboard area.
The fans up to a diameter of 1800 mm, delivered assembled, are dynamically balanced. The blades of the
larger fans, delivered disassembled, are moment balanced against a master blade to ensure the complete
interchangeability. Balancing grade is 6.3 as defined by ISO 1940.

HUB
The hub is composed by a lower disk (FE 430B UNI 7070), 8 mm thick, and by an upper stiffening ring,
8 mm thick (FE 430B UNI 7070). The steel hub boss (C40 UNI 7845) is bolted to the lower disk. The
blades are clamped between the lower disk and the upper ring through pillow blocks made from extruded
aluminum 6060 T5 UNI 573-3. The clamping is over-designed, in order to avoid any potential depitching
problem.
The hub can be supplied upon request with a tapered bushing of the size indicated by the customer. The
hub, which is dynamically balanced, allows assembling and disassembling one blade at the time.

ANTICORROSIVE PROTECTION
The standard blade shanks and the hubs are electro-galvanized. Stainless steel components are available
upon request.

PERFORMANCE AND NOISE

IVI fans are specifically designed for achieving optimum performance and low noise emission. These
characteristics are similar or better than the corresponding characteristics of the competitor fans that use
the same blade typology.

FAN STRENGTH, FATIGUE AND VIBRATION

IVI fans are specifically designed for heavy duty operation to ensure trouble-free operation in the fan
lifetime. In particular the hub diameter and the blade shank diameter are larger than the ones used by the
competitor fans, and the length of the shank internal to the profile is designed for the optimum stress
distribution.
For any job a fatigue analysis is done on the most significant blade areas to ensure infinite life of the
components under the design loads.
The accurate manufacturing and balancing procedures ensure the minimum vibration level related to the
fan balance.
The exact knowledge of the blade natural frequency avoids operations in critical speed range.

MAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF IVI FANS
AUTOVARIABLE

BLADE
The blades of the autovariable fans present the same characteristics as the blades of the AP fans. The
same profiles are utilized. The shanks end with a flange to connect the blade assy to the bearing housing.

HUB
The hub is composed by a lower disk (FE 430B UNI 7070) and an upper stiffening ring. The steel hub
boss (C40 UNI 7845) is bolted to the lower disk. The fixed bearings shafts are clamped between the lower
disk and the upper ring through pillow blocks made from extruded aluminum 6060 T5 UNI 573-3. The
blades are flanged to the bearing housings and can rotate about the longitudinal axis to allow the pitch
angle variation.

ACTUATOR
A positioning valve controls the linear movement of the pneumatic actuator. The pitch control rods,
connected on one side to the actuator and on the other side to the bearing housings, transform the actuator
linear movement into the blade rotation about the longitudinal axis, changing the blade angle of attack. In
this way the desired air volume is automatically provided to get the necessary cooling capacity. Both the
positioning valve and the actuator are fed by compressed air (3-15 and 30-100 psi) passed to the rotating
components through a rotary joint. The low pressure air (“instrument”) is controlled through the
thermodynamic characteristics of the cooler and feeds the positioning valve, allowing the high pressure
air (“supply”) to control the actuator travel.

In case of air failure the actuator spring keeps the blades either at the maximum or minimum angle,
according to the customer specification.

The actuator is dynamically balanced together with the hub.

Two basic configurations are available: the standard one (AV) with the actuator located on the top of the
hub disk, and the remote control type (AVCS) with the actuator detached from the hub and located at the
bottom end of the main shaft.

ANTICORROSIVE PROTECTION
All the carbon steel components are electro-galvanized. Stainless steel components are available upon
request.

IVI autovariable fans present the same optimum characteristics as the AP fans regarding the performance,
the efficiency, and the noise emission.
