Elizabeth Taylor was born in London to American parents in 1932. She was named after her
grandmother. At the beginning of World War two, Elizabeth, her brother and her mother returned to
live in Los Angeles, on the west coast of the USA. She made her first film at the age of nine, but
became really famous when she appeared in the film National Velvet in 1944. The film was a huge hit
and Taylor became a star. She was very beautiful, and a talented actor. She made films with some of
the most famous actors in the world including James Dean, Paul Newman and Katharine Hepburn. But
Taylor is also famous for her love life. She was married eight times to seven men. One of the greatest
loves of her life was the British actor Richard Burton. They met and fell in love when they were
making the film Cleopatra. They were married twice, and Burton gave her many expensive presents,
including the spectacular 69-carat diamond known as ‘the Taylor-Burton Diamond’. But after her last
divorce in 1996 Taylor decided never to marry again. Taylor had three children of her own, and
adopted a daughter. She is now a grandmother of 10 and a great-grandmother of three. These days she
lives in California and does charity work.
