International Call Prefix
International Call Prefixes
used to select an international telephone circuit for placing an international
call. International call prefixes are used to dial out of a given country when
making an international phone call. Some countries share an international call
prefix and some countries have their own unique code. The most common call
prefix is “00” because it was set as a standard by the International
Telecommunications Union. Not all countries, however, have adopted this as
their international call prefix.
Afghanistan - 00 Bolivia – 0010, 0011, 0012, 0013
Antigua and Barbuda - 011 Canada - 011
Argentina 00 China - 00
Australia - 0011 Colombia – 005, 007, 009
Austria - 00 Indonesia – 001, 007 (017 if
Azerbaijan - 00 using VoIP)
Croatia - 00 Iran - 00
Cuba - 119 Iraq - 00
Iceland - 00 Ireland - 00
India - 00 Israel - 00
Italy – 00

Trunk Prefix
A trunk prefix is a digit sequence to be dialed before the telephone
number to initiate a telephone call for the purpose of selecting an
appropriate telecommunications circuit by which the call is routed.

Used in domestic (National) telephone call

In most countries, such as Pakistan, India Australia,

Germany and the United Kingdom, the trunk prefix is 0.

In the North American Numbering Plan it is 1.

CIRCLE CODES /STD Codes
Subscriber Trunk Dialling (STD) codes are assigned to each
city/town/village, with the larger Metro cities having shorter area codes
(STD codes), the shortest being 2 digits.
194 – Srinagar, Kashmir
11 - New Delhi, Delhi
22 - Mumbai, Maharashtra
33 - Kolkata, West Bengal
44 - Chennai, Tamil Nadu
40 - Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh
80 - Bangalore, Karnataka
20 - Pune, Maharashtra
79 - Ahmedabad, Gujarat

Kanpur and Lucknow are the two

cities between which the first STD
call of the country was made.

Zones
The Department of Telecommunications has divided IND into
various cellular zones such that within each zone, the call is treated as a
local call, while across zones, it becomes a long-distance call (STD
calls).

A cellular zone (or telecom circle) is normally the entire state, with a few
exceptions like Mumbai and Kolkata (which are different zones than their
respective states), Goa (which is a part of
the Maharashtra zone), Chhattisgarh (which is part of Madhya
Pradesh), Jharkhand (which is a part of the Bihar zone) or Uttar
Pradesh (divided into multiple zones). Delhi is a unique circle because it
includes towns from Haryana and Uttar Pradesh as wel

At present, there are 22 telecom circles or service areas. They

are classified into 4 categories:
Metro, A, B, C.

Mobile Billing Issues

1. Postpaid mobile phone

2. Prepaid mobile phone

M Sc. IT 3rd Semester

Page 15
Major Differences between the two types of systems

Service Payments: This is the most important factor which differentiate

between two customer bases. Pre-paid customers make payment in
advance before using the service where as post-paid customers use offered
services throughout of the month and at the end of the month, customer
receive the bill, to pay within the given timeframe.

Charging & Billing: For pre-paid customer it is required to charge the

customer in real time for all the usage where as post-paid customers can
be charge at the end of the month.

Page 16
Major Differences between the two types of systems
Roaming: In the early years, prepaid mobile phones could only be used
within the operator's network who the customer purchased the phone from.
It was not possible to roam onto other GSM networks when using the phone
abroad. This was because the operator had no way to bill calls in real time
from another network.

prepaid phones now offer billing while roaming using one of the following
methods:

Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) message

the prepaid mobile phone user dials a "trigger" number from the foreign location
using a USSD message

Customized Applications for Mobile networks Enhanced Logic (CAMEL ).

This allows real time billing by the home operator without having to
dial the customer back.

Page 17
Post Paid Scenario
Network elements (like switches, SMS-SC) produce raw usage
called Usage Detail Records (UDRs) or Call Detail Records
(CDRs) which contain information required by the billing system:

Calling number (A number)

Called number (the number receiving the call) (B number)
when the call started (date and time)
Call duration
Call Type (MOC, MTC etc., MOC stands for Mobile Originated Call
and MTC stands for Mobile Terminated Call)

CDRs

Pre Paid Scenario
Steps involved in prepaid billing in brief are as follows:

When customer makes a call, prepaid switching gateway captures the calling
number and sends the account information to the real time billing system.

LL Number
Land line numbers are at most 8 digits long (usually in major metros).
The total length of all phone numbers (STD code and the phone number)
in India is constant at 10 digits,

Short codes
There are many companies in the Indian market who rent keywords, on a
monthly basis, whose characters, on a typical mobile phone keypad, represent
short codes. Short codes are five digits in length and have to start with the
digit '5' like 58888 as of 2007. Previously, they were four-digit in number and
could be of any combination, like 8888 or 7827
