INTRODUCTION
CASE BACKGROUND

Alumni donations are an important source of revenue for colleges and

universities. If administrators could determine the factors that influence
increases in the percentage of alumni who make a donation, they might be able
to implement policies that could lead to increased revenues. Research shows that
students who are more satisfied with their contact with teachers are more likely
to graduate. As a result, one might suspect that smaller class sizes and lower
student–faculty ratios might lead to a higher percentage of satisfied graduates,
which in turn might lead to increases in the percentage of alumni who make a
donation.
Statement of the Research Problem

The problem is to find a solution to ways to increase the giving

rate so that the universities can adjust their policies. To identify
and determine the factors that influence increases in the percentage
of alumni who make a donation.
Research OBJECTIVES

The research objectives are to know what variable has a significant

correlation to predict the alumni giving rate and to find ways to
furthermore increase the giving rate.
1. Develop numerical and graphical summaries of data
2. Utilize regression analysis to predict alumni giving rate
3. Provide and suggest policies that would increase the probability
of alumni giving rate

ASSUMPTION: Satisfied graduates are more likely to donate to the school.

The main assumption in this study is that the more satisfied the
graduates are, the more likely they are to give back to the school. It was also
mentioned in the book’s description that students who are more satisfied with
the contact with their teachers are more likely to graduate. Satisfied
graduates can be described by the smaller class sizes and the student/faculty
ratio, wherein it was suspected that these factors have an influence on the
alumni giving rate. Therefore the variables of the study are identified as:
CLASS SIZE
Independent Variable

Student-faculty ratio
Independent Variable

Alumni giving rate

Dependent Variable
Conceptual
framework
The figure above shows that the independent

variable serve as predictors of the value of the

dependent variable. The linear relationship among

the different independent variables and the

dependent variable will be compared in order to

determine which factor is the most appropriate

predictor.
Statistical technique

The aim of this study is to predict the alumni giving rate, therefore the
appropriate statistical technique to be used in this study is through the principles
of simple linear regression. This statistical technique only requires one
independent variable and one dependent variable; which in this case are the
satisfied graduates and the alumni giving rate respectively. Such technique is to
be used especially if the objective of the study would require to predict the value
of the dependent variable. Linear regression is also appropriate because it also
determines the linear relationship between the two variables.

RECOMMENDATIONS
i. For schools who want to determine their alumni giving rate, they may use other variables

to know or predict the alumni giving rate test. Like for example, satisfaction percentage with

their undergraduate experience. They could also use this to test whether the percent of alumni

who give to a school is a good measure of a school’s excellence.

ii. To other future researchers who want to take on a similar study, in their computation and

regression analysis, aside from excel, they can use line regression calculators online or any data

analysis software. For instance, Gretl ¾ an open-source statistical package.
