SAMPLING DISTRIBUTION

If we consider different samples of equal size from a particular

population then the probability distribution of all possible values of any
given statistic from all the distinct possible samples of equal size is
known as sampling distribution.
Any type of sampling distribution closely approximates a normal
distribution. The mean of a Sampling distribution of sample means is
the same as the mean of the population from which the samples were
obtained the mean.
Sampling distribution of the sample mean is the probability distribution of
all possible sample means of a given sample size. If a population
distribution is normal, then the sampling distribution of the mean is also
normal for sample of all sizes.

1. The life time of the light bulbs produced in a certain factory is normally distributed
with mean 200 hrs and standard deviation 25 hrs. If a random sample of size 49 is
drawn, what is the probability that the sample mean will be greater than 210 hrs?

2. From a population of 125 items with a mean of 105 and sd of 17, 64 items were
chosen.
A) What is the P(107.5<x<109)?

3. In a normal distribution with mean 56 and sd 21, how large a sample must be taken
so that there will be at least a 90 percent chance that its mean is greater than 52?

The lifetime of the light bulbs produced in a factory B has

a mean 200 hrs and sd 25 hrs. And the lifetime of the light
bulbs produced in factory A has a mean 250 hrs and sd
20. If 50 light bulbs produced in company A and 60 in
company B are selected at random and tested for the
length of life time. What is the probability that the sample
mean life time of A will be at least 40 hrs more than that
of B?
SAMPLING DISTRIBUTION OF PROPORTIONS
1.In a quality department of manufacturing paints, at the time of
despatch of decorative paints, 30% of the containers are found to
be defective. If a random sample of 500 is drawn with replacement
from the population, what is the probability that the sample
proportion will be less than or equal to 25%?

2. In the year 2001, a policy is introduced to give loan to

unemployed engineers to start their own business. Out of 1,00,000
unemployed engineers ,60,000 accept the policy and got the loan.
A sample of 100 unemployed engineers is taken at the time of
allotment of loan. What is the probability that the sample
proportion would have exceeded 50% acceptance?
SAMPLING DISTRIBUTION OF THE DIFFERENCE
OF TWO PROPORTIONS

Ten percent of machines produced by company A are

defective and five percent of those produced by company
B are defective. A random sample of 250 machines is
taken from company A and a random sample of 300
machines from company B. What is the probability that
the difference in sample proportion is less than or equal to
0.02?
