STA 342: TEST OF HYPOTHESIS CAT 1

1. During the lambing season 8 ewes and the lambs they bore were weighed at the time of birth the
following results
Ewe A B C D E F G H
Weight of ewe, x kg 44 41 43 40 41 37 38 35
Weight of lamb, y kg 3.5 2.8 3.2 2.7 2.9 2.5 2.8 2.6

Test whether the weight of the ewe and that of the lamb are independent at  = 5% (4Marks)
2. Consider the simple regression model yi =  +  xi + ei where  and  are constants,
E ( ei ) = 0 and Var ( ei ) =  2 . Assuming normal distribution, construct a test for the hypothesis
H o :  = 0 against H1 :   0 (4 marks)
3. Define the Neyman – Pearson’s lemma. Hence or otherwise show that the power of Best Critical
Region (BCR) for testing a simple hypothesis against an alternative hypothesis is never less than its
size. (7Marks)
