CLASSWORK 10

1. A random sample of 100 is taken from infinite population having the mean μ = 76 and the
2
variance σ = 256. What is the probability that sample mean will be between 75 and 78?
2. In a normal distribution with mean 56 and standard deviation 21, how large a sample must be
taken so that there will be at least a 90 % chance that its mean is greater than 52.

3. A random sample of size n = 36 is taken from an infinite population with the mean μ = 63
2
and the variance σ = 81. What can we assert about the probability of getting a sample mean
greater the 66.75?
4. The diameter of Ping-Pong balls manufactures at a large factory is approximately normally
distributed, with a mean of 1.30 inches and a standard deviation of 0.04 inches. If a random
sample of 16 balls is selected, what is the probability that the sample mean is between 1.31 and
1.33 inches.
5. Historically, 93% of the deliveries of an overnight mail service arrive before 10:30 the
following morning. If a random sample of 500 deliveries is selected, what is the probability the
sample will have more than 95% of the deliveries arriving before 10:30 the following morning.
6. The amount of time a bank teller spends with each customer is normally distributed with
population mean of 3.10 minutes and standard deviation of 0.40 minute. If you select a random
sample of 16 customers,
i) What is the probability that the mean time spent per customer is at least 3 minutes?
ii) There is an 85.08% chance that the sample mean is less than how many minutes?
iii) How large sample must be drawn so that there is at least 97.50% chance that sample mean
is less than 3.152 minutes?

7. The time spent using email per session is normally distributed with mean 8 minutes and
standard deviation 2 minutes. If you selected a random sample of 25 sessions
i) What is the probability that the sample mean is between 7.8 and 8.2 minutes?
ii) There is 95.99% chance that the sample mean is less than how many minutes?

8. A study in corporate leadership was conducted by VOW, a famous magazine. The study
concluded that in general 10% of corporate officers are women. Suppose that you select a
random sample of 200 corporate officers,
i) What is the probability that in the sample, less than 15% of the corporate officers will be
women?
ii) What is the probability that in the sample, between 10% and 15 % of the corporate officers
will be women?
ii) If a sample of 100 taken how does this change your answer i)?
9. According to the National Restaurant Association, 20% of fine-dining restaurants in
Kathmandu Valley have installed big-screen plasma television to show Euro Cup. If you
select a random sample of 100 fine-dining restaurants, what is the probability that in a sample
i) Between 15% and 25% fine-dining restaurants have installed big-screen plasma
television?
ii) How large a sample must be drawn so that there is at least is 90.15% chance that the
sample proportion is less than 25%?
